The biggest problem with ordering marbles in directly from Colombia is that many exporters don't seem to differentiate the rays as much as I believe they should, and it would be nicer to have them go by some sort of scale where they can be told apart. People aren't necessarily stupid when they pay more for a name, but I think instead they're paying more for a fish to be a certain variant that they personally find more attractive.
I ordered in a bunch of 'Royal' motoros a while back, and got in all the fish seen in the pictures (thel light fish shown in the group photo was a male I had previously from Peru). I was shown pics of ones that were similar to the one furthest to the left in the group photo, and that was what I was after (very dark base, orange spots, orange scribbling between and around spots). The other two, though both very nice IMO, weren't quite what I was after and honestly took much longer to sell than if I had recieved all the same as the far left. Looking back though I wish I had kept the ray in the single picture because I believe that she still had quite a bit of colour development to go through and probably turned out the best. If I had seen pics of all the rays, and the exporter had differentiated the variants, I may have still ordered the others - but the people who wanted the rays before they came were all intrigued by the royal photos I was shown and when they came in different weren't interested. So I ended up stuck with a bunch of rays that I personally wasn't interested in, and that it didn't seem anyone in my area were interested in either.
To me it is irrelevent what name is being attached. Unless you are provided with a photo of the exact specimen you are inquiring about, ( not a generic photo ) you are always taking a risk. It would benefit any
importer/retailer to provide photos of the exact specimen/specimens that are to be sold. I personally won't buy if I can't see it first.
While we are on the subject of MM's, are they 100% motoro that just developed marking between their spots? Could they be a motoro crossed with another closely related ray? Most MM I have seen at larger sizes seem to be more beefy than normal motoros.
