Marbled Pim + TSN Hybrid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What really through me off was when they went all grey with only the black spots and not the dark top light bottom you see in the picture.

Not sure what Planetcatfish has to say

Madding, watch for that color change and see if you can get pictures then too.

I'll keep my eye out for it.

What Aaron is talking about is this, everybody. The below picture was taken by Aaron/FishInABowl of the same species before the sale:

As you can see, the coloration makes it look almost like a different catfish altogether.

Mine is frequently all gray but you can still faintly see where it fades to lighter. I will get a picture tomorrow. Mine has the larger spotting but also some smaller spots near the dorsal.

Edit: Just saw the picture. when i said gray, I meant darker almost unstable look. That coloring is definitely strange too, but you can see the smaller spotting that I am referring to.

One thing I've noticed is that this species, unlike most TSN hybrids, does not have nearly as long and flat a duck-bill. It really does seem like some strange Marpim more than a TSN. In fact, aside from the elongated face and the shorter barbels, it doesn't look anything like a TSN.

I have a 12+" Sailfin Marbled Pim in the tank, so I can try to get some side-by-side shots. They seem to enjoy lurking in the same shadows despite having plenty of options to themselves.

By the way, he went wild at feeding time today. Ate more than his share of krill that was meant for the ray.

i agree. I think it more closely resembles a Marmoratus than a TSN aside from the 'shovel' nose. though the shape of the mouth is NOT like a TSN. maybe someone who is a member at planetcatfish can post some pics there too. I honestly feel that this is a new species. I am stumped at the large numbers of them that came in though from importers all the way down to the LFSs'

if you look they have the same dorsal fin as the tsn. these are some of the pics of mine and one of my tsn.. the pic where he or they are dark are when i first got them. they have bin split up since i got them as they dont stop fighting. but are fine with other fish.

Yes, the dorsal fin is certainly not as long or high as the Marpim. I'm going to stick with the assumption that these are farmed hybrids, and that the Marmoratus genes are dominant over the TSN (when usually in hybrids it is the opposite - usually it is just a TSN with a flashier pattern). This time that is not the case - there seem to be numerous physical differences.

John from snookn21 says that his are wild caught, however...
