Marbled Ray Grading Needed!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Think this would be just about impossible. Most marbles dont develop there marbling till they get over 8" so what would you do have a rating system for rays under 8" and another for over 8"?

I say the leave the system as it is. Nicer patterns will demand a higher price. You would probably have disputes between buyer and seller "I bought a grade A marble not a grade B" then the seller would say "that is our grade A ray." Post a pic of the ray for sale and if someone wants it then good.

i agree

Have you ever seen anything beyond an f3? After about 10 times or so I forget who's been having this many litters of that and I don't have time to track my fish. Feeding and water changes are more important.

Great example Miles...

Perhaps a system that identifies the ray father?

we can call it the jerry-springer system. Not 100% guaranteed though :D

Grading is subjective. Lineage is not however, tracing lineage is tough. It is too tough to tell who the parents were. There are too many questions.....

1). Was there more than one male in the breeding system?
2). Did more than one male mate with the female?
3). Can there be more than one father in one litter of pups (proven to be true in some shark species)?
4). Can females store sperm from previous matings to produce new litters of pups (also proven in some shark species at Belle Isle Aquarium)?
5). Was there more than one female of breeding size in the breeding system?
a). Pat at amazonstingrays.com just had three litters in roughly 24 hours
b). Unless you witness the birth, how do you know which came from which?

Selective breeding is very cool and we should see some cool stuff in the future. Most of us will not be able to use the scientific tools to "know for sure." Anyway, isn't that some of the fun?
