ok so I was goofin off earlier on this thread. And I apologize cuz this is really no laughing matter, Its really sad to see all these fish like this. And I have to say I do not think this was natural. If you look carefully, alot of the fish are up way out of the water. Up a ledge in some cases. And these are big fish, I dont see a buzzard picking up a 5-6 pound gar and moving it up a ledge to eat it on the side. And I dont think its poison either or cold because theres no way that a fish can make it that far out of the water by jumping. (assuming they may have been trying to escape the poison). to me it looks like someone seign netted the place and dumped all the fish on the side and then went through removing the fish they wanted. The reason I think this is because all you see is plecos and gar, 2 fish that really dont have any value as food or anything else. So it seems to me they just picked all the fish they wanted and left the "useless" ones to die. Its very sad. But I guess nobody is gonna do anything about it.

If it were a net used in the way you're thinking, all the carcasses would be found in one spot where the 'fisherman' did the sorting.

The fish are evenly spread out, which to me points to the birds in the area. Midnight did point out there were a lot of birds.

Yes, initially the dead fish could not be pulled up too far, but after most of the fish has been eaten, the birds that haven't had a share yet could grab the now lighter slim pickings to a spot where it can have more freedom to pick at the carcass.

Fish die off is a natural occurring phenomenon, that tragically, can also be blamed on mankind from time to time.

But without any evidence, blaming a human isn't exactly fair, especially when the bulk of evidence points to a 'run of the mill' natural die off.

^ I'm with Cohazard. I highly doubt a guy went around and caught all those fish and then spread them around the bank like that.... get real.

It's very hard to believe the gar died of lack of oxygen as they are air breathers and can live in the lowest of oxygen levels, but it's possible.

Midnight said that the lake is still teaming with fish. I wonder if the lake is overpopulated with fish and with the colder water and lower oxygen levels could have killed the fish. The only other thing I can think of that could have done this is a small toxic spill.

From what I read on the FWC site link posted earlier, most of the die off in these scenarios are the exotics that don't belong there in the first place, which is why there are so many pleco.

I'm betting that the pleco die off caused an ammonia spike, sent the gars to the surface to breathe (since ammonia lowers oxygen levels in water), and with the temp drop keeping the gar from staying in deeper water where they would normally escape extreme temp changes, a lot of gar died just from trying to breathe (and ammonia poisoning too from so many dead pleco).

Using the word 'massacre' in the title is very mis-leading, especially considering that this is a known phenomenon.

I'd love to see the data collected by the FWC regarding any correlation between natural die-offs and seasons.

I'd also like to know what surrounds this lake, like any kind of factories, main roads, anything that could explain waste or toxic substances accidentally being introduced, etc...

well like ive said already in this thread
a year or 2 ago it got waaaaay colder then it has anytime this year by far
thats why i dont believe the cold story
i understand the one cold night vs a week of cold but it hasnt been that cold yet
:irked:

and there is nothing but nature around the lake....

Its doesnt looks like all fish were killed by hicks (my people). Dont see any spear holes or bow holes on the dead fish. No beer cans or cigarettes. And that area look unsuited for netting. The fish were spread all over bank, all different sizes from little to big fish so netting theory's out. Dont see any boot tracks all over the mud. This fish kill cannot be done by a single person alone (see too many dead fish) as it must have his buddies involved into it but I see no proof that it was done by the people.

wow that is just crazy...ive never seen anything like that..and its awful if a person actually did that...esp because they just dont like them...you frequent this spot often?

i have seen this a few times with smaller body's of water and large amounts of fish.cold weather, low oxygen and maybe just natures way of thinning out?

With so many fish, food is not adequate so many of the fish are not as strong as they should be.

Since the lake was still teaming with fish, it could have been over populated and survival of the fittest rule came into play?

Or Midnight did it!! :WHOA:

:grinno:
