Massive pop eye

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Petland, not surprisingly, blew me off when I called to ask about extending their warranty (which is a below industry-standard 50% refund in 5 days) and were, quite frankly, very unfriendly about it.

It's a pretty obvious case of buyer beware when you're buying fish from a lowlife puppy mill supporting garbage store like that, but I guess I felt bad for them and thought I could nurse them back to health. This guy seems to have taken a turn for the worse, though, which I guess isn't unexpected. We'll see how it goes with the frequent water changes and I'll get some Maracyn II.

How will I know it's beyond repair, and then what do I do? Will the eye just come off on its own? My only experience with one-eyed fish has been with a yellow lab that was born without one (he still loves his life though and holds his own in the fry tank against much larger babies).

Keep the water clean add some salt. That should help alot. Keep us updated.

He is doing better already, but it's still pretty awful. He and the rainbow seem to like each other in the QT too.

Meanwhile, the other three are stable and becoming much more social in the main tank. The one guy is still kind of bugeyed but looks better.

Turn for the worst today for both fish in there. The water quality took a tumble as they did not eat any of the antibacterial food my girlfriend fed them last night. The rainbow had a ton more new open sores (some bloody), was bloated, and hyperventilating. The datnoid's eyes actually looked better, but cloudy now, but he developed a small open sore on his forehead, likely passed on to him from the rainbow. This scares me. I changed all but about 2" of water out of the tank and euthanized the rainbow, since I have never seen a fish recover from the stage he was at and he was really unhappy. First fish I've ever euthanized :( . So right now it's just clean, salty, well-aerated water for the dat, but I am going to want to add something to treat the wound, maybe tonight or tomorrow. Behaviorwise he seems fine (If I had to choose one word to describe him it'd be bored) but the new sore really worries me.

The tank is at ground level and bowed and I couldn't get anything to focus so these may be the world's worst photos, but it might at least give you an idea of the shape he's in. The out of focus one was me trying not to use the flash, since the flash just illuminated the water spots on the tank. It's hard to see but you should be able to pick out the white spot on his head. It's not a bump or anything, just kind of white and fuzzy. Any specific medicine I should now consider because of that? The last pic is of the rainbow, taken a while ago, with the beginnings of his sores. At this point, the wound concerns me a lot more than the eyes.

that happen to my flowerhorn but it went away.

From what you were describing, I expected worse. I think he still has a chance. You might want to give him something to hide behind.

Good call. There was a big obsidian rock in but I took it out to clean the food particles and forgot to put it back.

I'm certain he still has a chance, I just want to be positive I do everything right for him. I've never had a sick dat before and in the past it has seemed like my medications were too late for other fish... just don't want that to be the case here.

Is the sore on the first ray of the dorsal? I'm not sure I see it.
What meds are you giving the dat?

It looks more like it's in front of the first ray.

No meds right now, just salt and heat.

Are you doing daily water changes? You said the dat has a open sore that looks white and fuzzy. You may want to treat for fungus. The fungus med will also help with the cloudy eye but also a lot of water changes. Good luck and get us a better pic! LOL!
