there was a pearls before swine comic needed for here.

It was a young gator talking to his dad. he asked him a math question. dad said shut up and get job, math stupid. son said i dont think my teacher will except that answer. dad, what does she know? she teaches math.

hmm that might be funnier in my head..........

lol. what a headache. Calc 2 is hard, I will never take it. At my school you only need calc 1 if you take chem 2 and physics 2 otherwise you need 2 of the 3.. I am environmental based geology, but even enviornmental bio you can choose to take stats instead of calc 2. Premed you need it but not env bio. which pretty much is zoology.
The problem you posted I remember actually. ha I do use calc in Hydrology class. The vadose zone is one thirsty beast! That is what I have gotten out of my money so far.

Why did I even bother looking at this thread ahah... I dislike math :D

Show off! :D

did ya study after your lectures?

I have an honours biology degree and yes, math is required generally in year 1.

they make you take hard math for two reasons:

1. to weed out the lesser students
2. the chemistry and physics courses often required are all math based. I had to take a year of calc. in university etc.

for example, in my bio program, chemistry was required, but you had to be enrolled in calc as a corequisit in order to take chem. so you had to take math and chem at the same time for bio...grrr...

there is no real world application for calc like that in bio, but there is lots of math through, especially with logarithms. you will see logs popping up in ecology and microbiology because growth and population dynamics use equations that use them. so it does rear its ugly head throughout..

tough it out. everyone in your program is in the same boat.

don't be afraid to go to the prof's office hours and ask for help. forming a study group with friends is helpful too. we used to reserve a quiet room in the university library and just go for hours.

as far as the specfic problems go, sorry, its been over 10 years since I had to do all that stuff, and I can't remember any of it LOL.

good luck!

I LOVE the pearls before swine comics

Studied for 5 hours before the test as wel as kept up with all of the material through the class and did all the assigned homework and on the few problems I did not understand, I went to the professor and asked for help. This test was placed in front of me and I had no clue what it was asking. it was only 2 problems and it makes up a quarter of my grade. I think I did terrible.

The thing I don't understand is that it all made sense this morning before the test when I went over my study guide but he did not ask anything from the homework or worksheets it was something that we were supposed to be able to prove by using all of the rules that we were taught but I had no idea where to begin. I suffered through it but I have my fingers crossed for a D at this point.

I also already took chem and although there was some math, it was not this intense. Logs and curves and exponents and all that algebra I can handle easily but I feel like calc is not even math any more, it is a whole new beast to me.

FML. sorry for ranting.

studying hard for a test and then having the test put in front of you and saying "WTF is that!" is totally normal.

thats how they make it hard.

everyone else was probably thinking the same thing.

if you know the material well, you still have to think on your feet on the test.

they test you on questions that require you to take what you know and apply it in a new way that you haven't seen before. thats why it seems like you studied for a different class than what test you were given.

I used to hate that. but unfortunately, its normal.

I remember my first year chemistry final exam. I studied hard, looked through the exam and couldn't do any of it. LOL.

but by the end of the 3 hour exam, I had scrounged up enough marks to pass. somehow LOL.

good luck with the result and don't give up. keep at it and study hard.

you don't need to get As unless you are going to med school. and believe me, few people get As in hard university programs like sciences/math. its not like highschool where we all used to get As in calc, chem, bio etc.

I got As in highschool across the board but struggled like hell through my bio program. but I made it.

you will too. just keep at it and don't give up.
