Maxing out Oscars in a 125

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Starting at babies, 6 o's in a 125 would be WAY more happy than all of the guys on here with them in 55's :jaw-dropp For many many many years......And they are your tanks so if you are cool with it give it a go! If you feel like thinning out a little bit then that would be your choice 5-7 years down the road.

IMO it all depends on how you maintain the tank, If your going to stick with 5-7 day water changes then go with 2. However if your going to keep an eye on the parameters and do water changes as required to keep nitrates around 20ppm even if this takes 3 pwc a week, Then i would say 3 or even 4 may be possible. At the end of the day it all depends on your love of fish, If you spent your entire life locked in a room would you like to share it with someone to talk to or a few people to argue with.

Agreed. You more than likely could keep 6 fullly grown adults in a 6ft tank but the ammount of food you would need to feed to keep them healthy would more than likely require 50% water changes everyother day just to keep the NitrAtes in check and avoid the dreaded HITH. IMO Buy 4 juvies, feed them well then at 6 months decide which 2 you going to grow out to full adulthood.

IMO...Id never keep 2 oscars together again. Aggression problems have always arroused for me when I have kept only 2 together...because one is always picked on by another. I personally like my group of 3...they shoal threwout the tank and even tho they are tickling the 10" mark havent had a single ounce of aggression. They room with a 12" Pacu, a 9" Black Shark, and 2 8" Tinfoils and a 6" SunCatfish in a 150G. To me it is isnt really overstocked but Im sure to others its horribly so. But tank maintenance and filtration mean alot in this business. If you were to ONLY keep oscars...I would keep 5. But as the fish matured you would probably do best to add a secondary canister filter...powers just dont have the biological capacity to deal with a high bioload tank over 100G again IMO. :)

just based on the amount of water and space available, i would say to get 3, but if two pair up later on they'll go after the other one.

i have had 4 oscars in a 125 for some time doing water changes every 5 days and 50% and not overfeeding of course when they got big lets say around 9" i moved them into a 300 gallon with some other cichlids

its your move but if you think you could keep up with 4 oscars in a 125 and deal with aggression in the right way i have seen it done

Right now I have 2 9"O's, 6 7-8" Orinos, and a Blood Parrot in my 125. Water changes every week 50%. Have two CFS4's running. Oscars always fight, but I dont think it is because of them being cramped. Theyre just a-holes to eachother....wont bother the Orinos at all. I would say you could go with 4 with adequate filtration.

i think about 2 maximum really

I am thinking about getting 4-6 juvy's and seeing how they fair. Next year with my tax return I am upgrading to a 210, so I hope to keep 4-6 in that. Thanks for all the advice and input. Oh, and Bigspizz. The sweet con you sold me stays with them. He is too awesome to part with.
