Maxing out Oscars in a 125

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I should be able to make a group of 4-6 last close to a year in a 125 though?? That is starting them out as juvies.

in a year those juvies can easily hit about a foot long, so i wouldnt suggest it for that long. But hey, its your tank do as you will. Maybe you can just experiment with it, get however many you want then really moniter your params and thin out the group until you can keep the params in check. Good luck with w/e you decide.

i would say two and possibly three.. if that is all that you will have in the 125gal.. and probably later on one would be removed because of aggression{but not always} i had two and i had to take one out because he beat up the other one although they were same size etc. But if you are good with water changes then i would go for three..

I have a few 100 gallon "long" acrylic tanks - 6 feet long, 2' wide, 2 feet high. (Measurements are off the top of my head, not accurate.)

At one time I had 18 Rescue Oscars (adults) in one of them - Feeding time was quite gnarly. The KEY is FILTRATION and MAINTENANCE. Oscars are great in groups because aggression is worked out amongst themselves with almost no damage whatsoever.

That would have been a sight to see, I bet it gave a whole new meaning to the term "Feeding Frenzy"

I would go with 4 O's and very heavy filtration. See how things go, monitor your nitrates and change the water enough to keep them below 30 ppm.

Bder - definitely!!! Puts all those tanks with big Cichla to shame at feeding time. Not to mention Oscars being one of my favorites (obviously) - Several Oscars will definitely be one of my first purchases in Nova Scotia - and CHANNA!!!!

So yeah - good filtration is key.

I have a 9" oscar and a roughly 9" jag in a 125 with 2 XP3's an 1 AC110 and I'm doing 50-60% WC a week just to keep my nitrates below 20ppm.

Interesting. Mine don't go above 20 ppm for 5-7 days with an 11 inch jag, 11 inch festae, 14 inch FH, 8 inch GT, 10 inch JD, 7 inch Tex, and 2 cons in a 125. I use API liquid too.

Its interesting IMO to see what some people can get away with and what others cant in comparable sized tanks....my stocklist for the 150 is rather thick but Ive never seen nitrates above 15ppm and I do WCs every 10-14 days.

Something in the water I guess??

each oscar need 40-50 gallons so 2-3 cscars max but with giant water changes and alot of filtration you could have 4 mabye 5 but that would be alot of work
