A 12 inch fish shouldn't be in a 12 inch wide tank.

I generally agree with that statement. However, I have never seen a 12 inch JD. Most males top out at 10-11 inches and females at 8-10 inches. My breeding pair I purchased recently was raised in a 55 gallon for nearly 3 years and they are both about 10 inches (I have never seen a female this big) and very healthy. In my opinion a 55 is perfect for a breeding pair. This is what it produced for me (now moved to my 210)...

They started in the 150.. Cut down to the 55 to breed went back to the 150 then a 110 then the 250.. then someone made me an offer and I had to let them go :(
