Mayan Pair in African Cichlid tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congrats on the spawn! I really love how you're using the africans as dithers/targets. Great idea :headbang2

Lol the funny part is that the spawning is just an added bonus... before I added the female, it was an all african cichlid tank with the one big male mayan (like a grouper in a reef) as the peacekeeper and dominant fish. NOBODY messed with him, and he hated anyone fighting: he'd break up fights between all but the smallest fish. then i added the female and well, the rest is history!

soon i'll be doing one of my routine "screw with all the fish by moving them around" that I often do with all my tanks... It mainly involves moving some of the juvenile africans from their rearing tanks into the big 120, the fry from the breeder boxes into the rearing tanks, and selecting livebearers from my planted tank for controlled breeding in other tanks. it's quite a project, but one i enjoy doing! i'll wait till the fry get a little bigger though before adding new africans i think ;)

Announcing wigglers this morning! half of the eggs have hatched and momma is busy moving the hatched ones to a new spot... video soon hopefully

The fry are free swimming!!! I honestly can't believe they made it this far, without getting eaten ore parents wiping out the tank... Wiggler videos sucked, so I'll take a video of the babies ASAP with a magnifying glass if the camera will focus!

Parents dis great for a couple weeks, but as I was watching one day, the simply looked at each other, and swam away! I was only able to save about 10 and am currently raising them in a 10 gallon until they actually look like mayans and not little indistinct fish, Lol.

The parents are fine, and they might breed again in a week or two... This time I'll divide the tank to seperate them from the rest of the fish
