MBU behavior--what does it mean?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No worries, my intention was simply to provide an answer to your question based on my personal experiences with keeping this fish past and present. It's not my intention to judge or misjudge you, really. I just wanted to help with what I've learned so that you can enjoy your fish for a long time. Best of luck.

Thanks. I just wanted to clear the air before the thread got out of hand; most Mbu threads turn that direction.

The info you provided was helpful and correct! The belly flash is some type of submissive movement. I discovered the fish he originally bit have toughened up and are now bullying him. The 10" dat has been moved to the 1100g and the mbu is now separated from festae and Bichir. The Mbu is eating and still swimming happily around. I will do a water change tomorrow and provide and update. Thanks for the help!

Well it's been 2 weeks since I sectioned off the mbu. He has contracted ich and had it for pretty much the entire time. When the puffer came in the mail, he had ich and I treated it successfully. It is such a pain! None of the other fish have any signs of ich, just the puffer. I have raised the temp to high 80's and added lots of kosher salt. Hopefully, it goes away....

Did you keep treating for an extra few days - week after you originally got rid of it??? Since as im sure you know, the cysts of the Ich can stay in the tank after its no longer on the fishes body...

The first time he had ich, yes, I kept the heat up another couple days. Temp is at 89f. He has certainly gotten more ich on his body today (even after the water change yesterday). I am hopeful that the cysts will die off and not reporduce over the weekend.

The only thing I have changed is moving from the more expensive API Aquarium salt over to Kosher salt. Could that be a factor? The dosage is the same.

^ i honestly havent dealt with ich in such a long time i honestly couldnt tell you??? But it would seem weird that API salt would work better than Kosher salt, since technically speaking, they should be the same thing no???

My guess would be the remaining Ich Cysts may have attached itself to your puffer, or maybe your puffers immune system is a bit weak, hence getting a 2nd case of ich?

How are the other fish in the tank doing? Any signs if ich???

This poor guy still have ich! This is the most stubborn case I've ever encountered.

Here is what I know:
-the puffer is the only fish in the system to have ich
-no other fish in the system has ever shown signs of ich
-the tank the puffer is in is a tile bottom tank. There is a smaller tank in the system with gravel.
-I have the temp at 89 and salt added. Been this way for almost 2 weeks now.
-other than the cysts, the puffer is healthy. He is swimming and eating like a normal puffer
-diet is a clam and a shrimp 5x week.

Hopefully,he can shed this on his own.

Hey man some types of ich are so stubborn salt and heat and copper won't get rid of them it's scary and I started to panic when I didn't quarinitine new fish and many of my fish got it...
Nox ich will though. Used it and it worked on my fish with a strain of stubborn ich. Not sure how much the dosage for puffers should be. It's pretty strong I used a fraction of the dose for my fragile small scaled fish it has instructions on it. Good luck man

Thanks bro. I'm very hesitant to use meds though. I think the puffer's immune system is weak, which is why it is the only fish that has ich. Everyone else is just fine.

As I was drifting off to sleep last night, I thought about trying a garlic food supplement to help with the immune system.

Does anyone have any thoughts on garlic/immune boosters for this little guy?

As long as your puffer will eat food soaked in it, i say go for it!!!

I used to sometimes suppliment a bit of garlic juice for my puffer... Just make sure the food gets a good soak to absord more of the garlic extract...
