Mbu possibility

So I've got a little 40g with some mollies guppys and a little elec blue jd. I keep seeing cute as little mbus recently, just wonder whether one could cohab in the grow out or would him and the jd not get on. This would only be a grow out.

Am i the only person who thinks its wrong to place an MBU in a 40G? Even as a grow out?

Also, since i dont know you, i cant help but ask, do you have a permanent home setup already for the MBU when it grows larger? As in a 500G+ tank?

I don't see a problem with a 40(as long as it's a breeder), as a grow out for a baby mbu. But it can only be for a couple of months.

Fair enough...

but from my own personal standpoint, i do wonder at times how many Fahakas and MBU's could have been stunted from being kept in smaller grow out tanks and only getting upgrades as they go along...

Since it would seem they grow incredibly fast if given a large amount of space at a small age...

Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest, so no more derailing from me :)

Agree with this ^^^.

Our Mbu is probably one of the bigger ones in captivity and lived in a either a 110G (48" long) or 48"x24" stock tub for the first 2.5 years of his life and 20"+ in size, while we were waiting for our house remodel to finish and for the big aquarium to be ready. That is obviously not ideal but he has no signs of stunting or other adverse effects from the experience. I have personally seen more large puffer that were stunted from lack of adequate nutrition than from tank size. Everyone worries about "too small of a tank" (whatever that actually means...) yet you still see people trying to raise a puffer that gets two feet long on snails or prawns, which is the real issue. That's why you read about people's Mbu that are like 5 years old and still only like 15" long. That is a much more germane issue than temporary tank size.

Just my 2-cents as always.
 
Appreciate all responses I have some larger tanks which he can move to once it hits 6". But nothing close to 500g plus is this really needed I may be able to get say something around 300g in a few years when he hits around 20".

I think you can get away with a 300 gallon as long as it's something like the Marineland deep dimensions. It's 6' long and 3' wide.
