Can anyone venture a guess as to the gender of the smaller fronts pictured? I selected them hoping they were female. They come from the same collection point and group as the big front. I assumed given the size and color difference, the state of their fins compared to the others in the group, and observed behavior that they were female. I'm about the farthest thing from an expert though. I've notice that one of the little ones gets picked on more often by the big guy, less so now that I arranged some hiding spots, but more still than I'd like. I may just need more females to complete a harem. Commence operation find more Nangus.
if you find some nangus please let me know cause i have 3 and i want about 2 or 3 more females 6-7 inches:naughty:

no you have to vent them

I know that's the only way to be sure, but let me tell you what I used as indicators. A group of 6 was being kept in a display tank. All from the same point. he first indicator I used was the size of the hump. From there I looked at how torn the fins were so as to tell who was being harrassed. I asumed the females would have fewer tears as the males would be fighting amongst themselves. I then looked at color, the two with fewer fin tears showed a closer match to each other. Lastly I used size. The two I picked had a very slight hump, similar color, little to no fin tears, and were smaller than the rest. I figured these would be good indicators in an established group. Whatcha think?

good ideas... just remember at times large males will tolerate younger males... a female not ready to mate yet can get torn up like another male... but your thoughts are pretty good...

just do not count on it... If you go to any decent LFS someone should be able to help you vent... or at least let you do it there... esp. if you are going to throw down some money

The guys there had never vented before but it's the best shop in town. Arizona sucks for fishkeepers. How would I go about doing it? Also, they had a couple fronts left but I assumed they were male. If I can learn to vent theres a chance I can check out the remaining stock. I'm seeing a roadblock in that I have Nangus, which are hard to find, and that I want a harem as to balance aggression/ have a possibility of breeding. So how do I go about filling my flock?

Still haven't vented them, hope to tonight or tomorrow. Random question though. IF I were to add African tankmates, what would you suggest? It will be some time before I have a full colony so I'm hoping to add some fish to make the tank a little more alive. Any recomendations? Something that will scavenge leftovers would be nice. I'll likely extend the current rockwork, I know many Africans appreciate such things.

Okay some buddies for these guys that could even stay if the tank is big enough... I like Calvus or Altocomps... I have heard of cases where a front has taken one down, but it is not often and they like to roam the rock work... but they will eat any fry they can. I also like some lelepui or Julies... but my julies and comps are not the best of friends... live well together but do pick at one another...just stay away from shellies and trophus for them...trophus could work, but most trophus people will tell you to stay away from this mix... I have had luck with buffaloheads or tang gobies...

I gonna have to buy an encyclopedia of Africans just to navigate that post.
