MD/VA area collecting

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i currently live in virginia beach and have been in the area since i was a kid. I know many places around hampton roads to get largemouth, bluegill, greens, warmouth, darters, catfish, etc. I have also fished the southwest portion of the state and have done some collecting along the new river.

i would be interested to hear what you guys have found and organize a collection trip through targeted virginia locations, particularly when it warms up a bit.

Wow, we got some interest going on here! And the monsterfishkeeper god neo! Neo, we have to do it, particuraly now as you might join.
I found rain. I rescheduled for later on this week, probably tomorrow, tonight I'm gonna try to make a better dipnet. I've got cut my seine down to 10' it's 20' right now, so was gonna use the leftovers to make an umbrella net and a bigger dipnet.
With all the people that are showing interest in this, I might start a SIG to keep everybody somewhat organized, or I could just start a PM list. What would be everybodies preference? Also, I kinda need to know how far people are willing to travel, where they are, and what species they are interested in, as well as what species they know where to find. I do not want to know specific collecting locations, those should be kept private for now.

well u know what im interested in(sculpin, bowfin and gar). ill let u know if its too far. lol

I definately know of 2 places to get bowfin, and 1 for longnose gar. At least I know some drainages where they are found. I'm working on getting a couple of small longnose, if I happen to collect some extra, would you want one? There is also a member (TPS Reports- by the way, I could set the building on fire and put arsenic in the guacamole- Bad movie reference) who is located in close proximity to the bowfin, even if he doesn't know it. Maybe we could con him into doing some homework here?
This site seems to have more interested parties than nanfa, so I'll probably post a poll with some possible areas to sample, and what to my knowledge could be there.
Is anybody interested in saltwater natives?

Polls on the way, people, anybody want to suggest an area?

My dad has a nice koi pond we can collect in? :) I'm just kidding but to be serious any chance of finding madtoms? I did a little searching but couldn't find any decent ranges for them.

Checkered madtoms can be found in the james river, and margined madtoms in the shanendoah river basins.
Based on the data I've compiled so far, a collecting trip on two sections of the James river basin is probably what were gonna wind up with. Keep everybody more or less happy.

My vote goes towards one of those locations.

Any updates on possible locations and people wanting to go? I've never really done any collecting so what would be a good idea of stuff to bring along?
