Does any of you guys have a mean lungfish? My lung has been trying to attack me the last couple weeks when i'm cleaning his tank....I'm not too thrilled with this, and i find it pretty intimidating...especially knowing he's going to be much bigger soon. anyone else dealt with this before? is it normal lung behaviour, or is he just pissed off at me? Hope he settles down a bit... If he bites off my finger i'm definitely going to flush his ass down the toilet...lol....maybe not, but i don't want to have to give him up.... (: :irked:

is it an african lungfish? they are definitely meaner than most other species. one must definitely exercise caution while cleaning their tanks or anything involving putting your hands in the tank...they could inflict quite a bit of damage if they bit you.
i have noticed this with my big aethiopicus, and to a lesser extent when i had my annectens. just keep an eye on them when you are doing stuff in the tank...sometimes a net will work to keep them away...either way, this behavior usually doesn't go away as the fish gets bigger/older, so continue to use caution from this point onward--

relaxing hobby ain't it

Yes, this happens quite often, I'm afraid. Having about 3 dozen of them I can see quite a huge range of behaviors, but yes, they do become extremely territorial of their tanks especially since they are kept alone as a general rule.

LOL yes - they look so sweet and becoming, but you definitely want to stay away from an angry lungfish LOL

Well...isn't that charming? Yes, i'd say i most definitely want to stay out of his way... He is normally so calm and slow but then all of a sudden "snap" and no time to think... glad he missed. i thought he might have been mad at me cause i took out his goldfish a few days ago... lol... he had them since we got him..... i will be way more careful and we are moving him into a pond type set-up so he will be easier to avoid while i'm doing maintenance. I'm assuming i can't put any live plants in with him though, is that right? right now he has some plastic vine stuff he likes to be on, in or under, and a castle to hide in that's about 18 inches across.

I haven't had any issues with keeping them with plants.

Anyone else?

i've had various species chew on plants before...especially anacharis, java moss, and java fern...perhaps some others. they supplement their diets with plant matter as they get older, so it's to be expected.

i've never really had them fully uproot larger plants, but they will readily graze on them...so i wouldn't hesitate to throw in a few 'disposable' plants in there, but i wouldn't plan on setting up an elaborate planted setup either :) --

cool... i just want to throw in a few plants to give him some hiding places and stuff. i was thinking of going with something floating, and something leafy... haven't really looked into it all that much, but i'm probably just going to go with whatever the lps has in stock that's low light when i have the cash to pick it up...right now i'm working on a pond set-up for the lung fish so he'll have more swimming room and less chance of biting me(i hope) because the water will be shallower than if i just upgrade his tank. that's pretty much drained all the extra money i get for a little while...
