Here’s my outside cage for my Bearded Dragon. Today was warm out - the first day he had gone in the cage for a while. The build is probably 3-4ft cubed. It was originally a sand pit for my sister and I when we were little, but we changed it into a cage when I got this guy. The basics of the cage is a 4-sided frame made out of wood with a small lip 6” off the bottom. The top originally had a little shader. It is curved just barely. All sides are stapled (or zip tied) with chicken wire.

The door is a simple 4-square frame reinforced with chicken wire. It has 2 simple hinges with a little handle. It also has a small lock. Above it is plastic mesh because plastic is easier to cut than chicken wire

On the inside, the cage bottom is at floor-level. I had to dig a foot under to put a tarp under so things like ants could not make it into the cage. Since my mom works at a wildlife museum, they always have spare rocks and pieces of wood, so it was a simple task to find the right pieces. As you can see, I also built a little 1x1x4 box to give him my Bearded Dragon a place to rest safely on a smooth surface. The bottom substrate is sand x gravel from Joshua Tree (via the museum).

This cage is very simple to make and very hardy. It’s been up and running for over 7 years. I highly recommend this for any future builds

Hmmm...that's a bit...well, let's call it "rustic". Sounds much nicer than "crude"...

...I love it! When I was your age I had all kinds of similar outdoor (and indoor...) contraptions. As long as they were either in the unfinished part of the basement, or behind the barn and sheds, I was encouraged to explore my interests.

I hope you realize how lucky you are to have parents that are similarly indulgent. I had plenty of friends who got nothing but a hard "No!" when they wanted to do stuff like that. I am forever grateful that mine let me play; you should be too. Enjoy!

It didn’t look as rustic before…. Yeah, my parents encourage my hobbies, as long as I don’t put stress on myself or disturb them too much. I used to collect little insects or reptiles and put them in this old 20g long for the day. Good times!
