Story:
My GF decided to start a fish tank in her dad’s apartment. Tank was cycled for three weeks with a large pleco and two small mollies. Ammonia and nitrate spike occurred at end of week 1 and slowly fell to zero by the end of the third week. At this time we removed the pleco/mollies and introduced 'Lucifer', a male Red Devil cichlid that is currently between 6-8" long.
He seems to be doing well, but is extremely aggressive and will charge the glass when someone approaches, sometimes even clanking his teeth on the glass for emphasis. The GF is convinced that this is his way of being affectionate and thinks that they have a special bond, lol.
Questions:
Anyhow, I have a few questions regarding general husbandry.
1) FOOD: We plan to make frozen bloodworms his staple, but can he safely be fed live food and if so what is recommended? The LFS owner told the GF that Lucifer should not be fed live food because of the potential for disease introduction. However, I would think that an occasional earthworm, mealworm, or feeder-fish would be fine.... and honestly, after all this work I think some carnage is in order... but only if it is safe for little Lucifer.

2) Burrowing/gravel: Lucifer enjoys burrowing and often moves gravel with his mouth. The GF is worried that he is eating the gravel, although it is clear to me that he is simply spitting it out shortly after grabbing it with his mouth. Is it dangerous for Lucifer to have normal gravel substrate..... If not we can simply use smooth river stones which would be too large to fit in his mouth. There are already some in there and it would not be a problem to remove the gravel substrate and replace with river stones.

3) Tank Size: How long before Lucifer outgrows this tank? I didn’t realize before we bought him that tall tanks are less optimal than long tanks in that large fish need the length to swim. Anyhow, please advise regarding this.

1. The glass banging is an aggressive territorial thing.

2. I would recommend feeding him a quality pellet as a staple diet. The bloodworms and feeders could be used as a treat.

3. Moving rocks is a normal things. It is a nesting activity. He should be fine in whatever substrate you prefer

4. Size is a subjective thing based on the environment such as water quality and nutritional intake. They do grow moderately quickly. I'm no expert with Red Devils, but 1/2" to 1" per month would probably be possible. I would look to relocate him as soon as a bigger tank with a longer and wider footprint is available.

Devils will move whatever substrate you have around the tank. He is not eating it.

I personally would not make blood worms a staple...good pellets and a wide variety of foods is what I try to do on my devils.

Yes, tank is too small. If it is a male he will need an upgrade, would be nicer for him if it were sooner than later. Also, that font is just awful.

If that is a 45 tall, then it is only 12 inches wide...therefore that fish looks nowhere near 8 inches.

Bigger tank, variety of good food with a good pellet as the staple. Hope you also do regular water changes while vaccuming the bottom.

The tank is already too small IMO.

A 75 gallon would be adequate for the life of the fish.

Pellets are fine, no need to feed frozen exclusively. Live worms, insects, etc are good too, if you use feeders make sure they aren't sick.

use pellets as staple and it already needs a bigger longer tank

No live food, it's poitnless and normally leads to diseases. If you want a show stopper brute looking devil start a good diet, market shrimp, NLS, bloodworms, like I said NO LIVE FOOD. They really dont need it.

Get a bigger tank ASAP. Devils/Midas need room to move, go as big as you can. 75gal is good but bigger is always better.

Good diet and good filtration is all you need. (with a bigger tank)

awesome looking devil he is just gorgeous and i agree with what everyone else has said the banging the glass is definitely territorial aggression not affection LMAO and he def needs larger longer tank, for fish a more horizontal/wide footprint is more important than how tall it is and once he has bigger home he may settle down with the aggression a little bit as well, and i agree with no feeder fish as they tend to transmit disease but i always like to feed a little extra protein through crickets or worms or the random grasshopper i find still alive in my pool (LOL)

haha yes and make sure your filming it and post!

Have your GF put her hand in the tank to see if he snuggles up to it:D!

For sure he will show some affection I think it will be called TOUGH LOVE:ROFL:

I would have to agree with what people are saying about longer tank a 4 ft 75g and it would be set for life though personally I say 100g
