I don't think monkeys are the best of pets either, as I don't think they're species are at a status where they should be touched (be it hunting or the pet trade) however, I don't believe I am one to talk what with iguanas and boas..I mean it's really no diferent to people keeping species of crocodilian, however, these are more readily aavailable and I think most in the pet trade are not threatened with exstinction.

She is really cute though and adorable. I had a dream I had a "pet" monkey the other day, woke up all sad haha :(

Everyone I know who has worked at zoos or dealt with small monkeys verify this.

I'll second that.

I think the key difference though, is you can pretty much garrantee a crocodile to be aggressive and anery as that is part of their nature so you expect it to be that way. With a primate, they can be all cute and cuddly one day and then the next day go ape**** and start trying to rip out your eyes and bite out your jugular. The unpredictability of them is what really makes them unsuitable as pets.

pah, crocs are just as unpredictable. They can look slow one second and really move the next.. thats what the owners of crocs know. Monkey owners should know they're just as unpredictable. Really no difference. Both animals are dangerous. If he has space, knows how to care for one and understands their unpredictable behaviour and also has the permit no one should say he shouldnt keep one.. cause I don't hear people telling the caiman owner in another thread he shouldnt keep caimans. But this guy has yet to say whether he understands this and has space and a permit.

yeah, but you don't go around diapering a croc and letting it chill out on your shoulder either. Tame or not.
And in the other thread people started making a remark about keeping the caimen until he told us his setup. I think we all just tend to assume the negative since there's just so much ignorance out there surrounding the keeping of exotic animals of all species.

Yes but we shouldn't on an exotic pet forum. That's where (for the most part) the enthusiasts are, no one questioned you for having a boa. Yes your boa is (potentially - like the monkey) dangerous (which I already assume you understand as your on an exotic pet forum - so I assume the best, not worst) so why should this guy get judged for having something abit more exotic than your boa, but you can't?

As for the caiman, people shouldn't start with remarks, ESPECIALLY on a forum, the majority of us are, enthusiasts and come on, theres more of us enthusiasts than ignorant people keeping exotics on this forum, so why not start with a welcome, a polite question, and then if it turns out to be one of those "ignorant people" we can start to educate more fiercely.

Why are people on this forum being SO quick to judge and SO uptight in the first place. Come on, just lighten up. I'm not saying I agree with the "pet", I'm not asking you to agree with his choice of "pet" I'm just saying lets just drop the attitude and be the friendly forum most of us are. He is not doing ANYTHING different to ANYONE who keeps exotics here. If he has his permit, lets drop it, we all are taking freedom from these animals, and ALL are unpredictable and it doesn't matter if his is more so than yours for gods sake. People can be so *****y and hipercritical at times.

If you read on the caiman thread, one person (showed) they must have felt abit like a fool...they were expecting a 13 year old kid to say "I've got a three foot tank and a heat mat ready for a caiman. I know they only grow to the size of the enclosure and it will be my best buddy and tame" but what they really got was a specialist wanting to replace his late caiman. Felt abit stupid eh.

KH - Not all of this is by any means directed at you, its directed at those (and they know who they are) who are what I described before. It's getting tiring seeing the same bad attitude to other people on forums. Yes the talk is about animals, but thats exactly it, about! We are talking to other human beings on this forum so why be unpleasant about it. Things could be said in nicer ways, and we are more than well aware of it. I stress that I'm not typically "agreeing" with the type of pet (I actually don't - sorry), and I hope he does realise what hes got himself into, but, I'm not rude about it.

Come on, stop jumping the gun (I mean everyone not just you) comment if you like the goddamn monkey (as I have yet to see you post advice or comment on peoples pics, seems you just post negative) and now the questions have been asked play it cool, wait for the guyto answer. If he's ignorant about the care, THEN begin to educate. Too many people on this forum don't comment unless there is something negative to say, though I have to say we've been lucky with this thread so far.

Awww. What a cutey. Primates are wonderfull animals if you know how to work with them and understand there behaviour. And if you can handle the responsibility of owning one in your household as a pet, I see no problem with doing so. I do not know if I would ever own a primate, I may someday but if I were too, it would be a long time from now.

I have a very large passion for all things exotic, and I like to discuss care and other issues of keeping exotics with other owners. It's grea to see and talk to people who care for there exotics correctly and will give help to other people with issues regarding exotics. Most people that I know who keep exotics, do so correctly and are very intellegent people who know what they are doing and how the animal will act as an adult, and as a baby.

Not saying I full advocate the sale and possesion of primates, as I dont. Because there are, and will always be people who dont do any research on an animal and purchase it because they have the money and do not think of anything else. There will always be people who think because they remove an animals defences that it will be a perfect pet and love them. You as a single person cannot stop this. No matter how much you would like too think you can, a single person cannot stop the sale of any one such animal, be it primate or other. The fact that people purchase animals with no intentions to research care digusts me.

I am on both sides of the fence, I advocate proper care and keeping or exotics, yet I despise people who pruchase them because its cool, or just because they have money and want toi show this fact off. But If I signa petition to ban a species, I'm not only stopping unexpierenced people to keep said species, I'm taking them away from people who know how to care for them, and would do everything possible to care for a said species.

Sorry for rambling....

Sorry Jessica but I have to disagree completely with you on this one. Comparing a primate to a reptile (caimen, boa whatever) is like comparing apples to oranges. Primates have actual thought patterns and do not just rely on instinct. They also have true emotions like a human, yes they can feel happy or sad no matter how rediculous that sounds. These things alone make them completely different beasts. My boa will never get "bored" of me or its enclosure but a primate most certainly would.

And I never "judged" him for having a primate so before going off on a tangent maybe you should re-read the post.

Also why is it that YOU can shout off whenever YOU feel "ok" about it but then climb to the other side of the fence when it pleases you to do so?
