Mega clear vinyl prototype tank build (concept building)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good, granted not the clearest but its not terrible either. Even if you can get a gel to work to increase the clarity this could still have a good market as long as it stays cheaper to use over other sealing methods.

So I think we are going to go with 4'(H) x 3'6"(W) x 6'(L). I'm thinking of trying 1/4" acrylic for the front and 1/2" plywood for the other 3 sides. That would put the price of the stand/frame at about $250.... if the acrylic doesn't blow out.

The gel does seem to be smoothing out and becoming clearer, but I still think it needs to be thinned before applying.

You scared me for a second! Those liners are for potable water, which is great for fish, but you can't see through them, they are opaque.

...I've got to patent this thing

Lol yup but for the guys with indoor ponds this would work great for them..... or even out door ponds :)

I think 1/4 inch acrylic is going to bow big time on a 4 foot deep tank. I figure the thickness of the acrylic would have to be the same with or with out the liner. At 4 feet deep by 6" long I think you need 1.25" to 1.5" for a regular acrylic tank? Maybe it's only an inch? but it's not 1/4" for sure. Of course it wont leak with the liner but will the viewing be distorted? Maybe the liner will take up some of the pressure and the bowing wont happen? Looking forward to pics :) I love these updates, keep them coming.

There is no way that liner could withstand the same pressure that makes acrylic bow out without tearing. I wouldn't think it could withstand hardly any pressure. Look how much it bow'd out on the small tank he's got... Ever overfill a water balloon? Same result... I bet

Oh good, a vinyl expert. Welcome to the thread. :)

I agree, I think it will bow a lot, but as long as it doesn't blow out off of the frame, it is viable construction. I kinda think it will blow out, but I have an idea to clamp it in place.

We'll find out, I guess.

@DFishFox, this stuff is pretty heavy-duty. It would take a lot to "tear" it. Puncturing is another story though. I suspect it could support itself without a box, but the deformity of the vinyl would make it look like hell.... I may have to try it though. :D
