Melafix Killed my fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
may i recommend a hospital tank? you're wasting your money treating a 125 for a fish or 2 with bad fins.

I had a similar problem with Melafix. I treated and one of my Yellow Labs stopped eating and now sits at the bottom of the tank. Its been a week and she just swims around somewhat when the lights are out, but does not come up for food or even take a bite when it floats by in front of her face. I try and never go full strength because each fish reacts differently to each medication. Some are stronger some are weaker.

I've used melafix/pimafix for many years. And when I reccomend it I always warn people not to increase temps, fool with their filters or otherwise change anything.. and to use 1/2 doses.. IME it is a powerful and effective treatment. But something to ALWAYS use caution with. as already stated.. just because it's not a "chemical" in the usual sense of the words doens't make it any safer.

I've used it from invert tanks to scaleless fish to Labyrithe species. Personally I've only used a full reccomended dose 2x and that was a last ditch effort to clear up some nasty Velvet. I did lose 1 fish to the O2 depleation I think but the rest of the tank managed to recover.

that's tough.. i never use it on my tanks though, i usually put the affected fish in a bucket and treat it there with an air-stone, obviously couldn't do that with a big male front but if i were you i'd buy like a 20 gallon just for emergencies

My little lab died yesterday. She hadnt eaten for two weeks. Be careful using medications.

That Suc... Sorry to hear man. I only use half the recommeded dose when using Melafix.

I will call the company and talk to my local fish store to find out if there is anything that they
could do as far as any kind of repaying or something

Maybe they will buy you a new tank also? And a new house to put your tank in.

Anytime you add elements, chemicals, decor to a tank, one must weigh the risks. Its unforturnate you lost a fish, but people have to be accountable for their actions and risks they take. The entitlement mentallity of this country is out of control

I have a bottle of that stuff, used it once and never, never will use it again. Good old fashion water changes will treat just about anything Melafix would

^ disagree

Melafix is used to treat bacteria infection. Water changes doesn't cure that.

To OP, what kills your fish was most likely lack of oxygen. Some bacteria metabolise the active ingredient in Melafix, taking up DO. Hence your fish not only has to compete for oxygen from your benefital bacteria, but also those as well.

I dose melafix in my tank to cure white patch forming around my fish's eye. I keep the water well aerated by pointing the output nozzle of my filter upwards, creating maximum agitation. The fish recovered after the 7 day treatment.

Sorry your fish didn't make it.

False. Wheat was correct in stating the truth. Despite Melafix's antibacterial claims, I don't believe it does the job otherwise, it would have cured a lot of bacterial infections singlehandedly which I do not believe it has done successfully so far especially treat for uninfected injuries. It can allow accelerated recovery rate of uninfected injuries but no more than that.

All Melafix does is suffocate the fish when it is poured into the tank. You need to ensure the fish has to breathe through it. Then again, why bother using it anyway when clean water can?
