I used it successfully to treat various problems such as fin and tail rot, hith, white patch on eyes which clean water (daily 40% water change, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate at 0,0,15) fail to do so
I had the same problem a month or so ago. I used it in my 150g and it killed three of my fish. The all went belly up. I did a water change as soon as I noticed but it was too late. I did daily water changes for about a week and was able to save the remaining four fish.
False. Wheat was correct in stating the truth. Despite Melafix's antibacterial claims, I don't believe it does the job otherwise, it would have cured a lot of bacterial infections singlehandedly which I do not believe it has done successfully so far especially treat for uninfected injuries. It can allow accelerated recovery rate of uninfected injuries but no more than that.
All Melafix does is suffocate the fish when it is poured into the tank. You need to ensure the fish has to breathe through it. Then again, why bother using it anyway when clean water can?
While I generally agree w/ you and highly respect your knowledge. I will politely completely disagree with you that melafix is useless and holds no anti-bacterial qualities. I do wonder if the effects of melafix are related to the filtration unit ran. as I said prior I don't change anything when useing the product... and that the reccomended dosing imo is much more then is needed. I also run the equivalent of HOB wet/drys on my tanks that I have used it for. In particularl penguin/emperor units. I also used it to treat very successfully scaleless fish, includeing clown loaches ( at work) and Spiney eels ( my own).
Only when clean water doesn't work do I resort to any medication.
And I have had mixed results and feelings about useing it w/ air-breathers. I had no issues with my gar.. but when I combined it with pimafix I lost a young knife very quickly, which I am confident was lost due to an overdose.. or possible bad reaction to both treatments used in conjunction along with air breathing.
It can be very effective, and very dangerous to use.
