I've been a member of various local and national fish clubs for the past 25 years or so and can't even begin to list all of that I've learned and experienced as part of being a member.

From getting to hear presentations from world authorities on fish (the guys who write the books!) to buying super cool fish for pennies on the dollar to winning free tank set-ups in raffles (Thanks Li / MFK)...to just meeting and hanging out with people in my area with similar interests, I can't imagine being "into" fish and not being in a fish club.

Most clubs cost next to nothing to join (my home club, CCA - www.capitalcichlids.org - is $20 per year, which includes meetings / events nearly every month...with a speaker, food, raffle, etc...basically for the cost of a cup of coffee per month) and most towns are metro areas have a club. Our club has ~200 members of all ages, races and levels of experience.

I'm interested why more MFK-ers aren't in fish clubs. Or maybe they are and just don't say it.

Are you in a fish club? Which one(s)?

If not, why? Thought of starting one?

Thanks,
Matt

What about the Greater Cinci Aquarium Society? http://www.gcas.org/content/

The Greater Cincinnati Aquarium Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promote the interests of the aquarium hobby.

Meetings are usually held on the last Sunday of each month at Winton Wood's Visitors Center, located at 10245 Winton Road at 7:30pm. The meetings usually include a program or a guest speaker, and a fry auction for the Breeders Award Program. Guests are welcome to attend any two of these meetings before joining GCAS.

Annual memberships are $10.00 for an individual or family. As a member of GCAS you may attend the monthly Meetings, the spring and fall Auctions (you can register early for the auctions too) and the Christmas Banquet, and you will receive our quarterly newsletter, Fincinnati.

Visitors Are Always Welcome!

Motor City Aquarium Society is the only club I belong to right now.
But, I hang around with a few of the Michigan Cichlid Association 's board members from time to time.

So for folks who AREN'T in fish clubs, why not?

Matt

1) No fish clubs around here. I live in a rural area where the closest small mall is 1 1/2 hrs away, and the next larger mall is 2 hrs away in the next state. No fish clubs near here.

2) I have two fish and have no plans for more. The 55 gallon tank they came in took up space and collected dust until we started using it to hold paper and cardboard for our woodburning stove. Hopefully within the next 6 months I'll have another 55 and a 300 gallon tank to get rid of..yard sale?

3) I joined online fish forums because I had a lot of questions. Not all fish forums even give out good advice. Seven years ago, there was a pacu forum. There were a lot of pacu enthusiasts. Unfortunately, when when two moderators both lost their pacus (and I suspect the owner of the forum also), the forum closed. I learned that you can keep pacu in 70 gallon tanks with poor water parameters for about 2 years before they die suddenly.

I specifically joined MFK because I had questions about large tank setups and filtration. I have not been disappointed. There are many members from all around the world who have provided useful information in their threads. I have PM'd members to ask specific questions, and they have graciously answered my questions. There are enough members on this forum doing interesting things that my curiosity keeps me coming back to MFK. I even get to see a lot of beautiful fish and setups of other members--things that I will never have. When it comes to fish meets, if it wasn't 15 hours away, and held in summer when I'm on the lake, I would like to go the Johnptc's So. CA meet.

Basically, I'm a two-fish one tank owner no where remotely close to any fish clubs, who has gleaned a wealth of useful information and had all her questions answered on MFK and made some fishkeeping friends along the way. For me, I don't need a fish club--I have MFK!!! :) :)

What I forgot to add is that in my region there is absolutely no interest in monster fish, whitch would make fish clubs quite boring for me.
Gotta keep it /\/\onster.
