MFK as social media platform and AI

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think this is pertinent. What is called AI - Artificial Intelligence - is not intelligence, just merely some stupid computer program.

Yes, I seem to remember that post too. That did not disrail the whole forum.

It seems to be the social media and search engine giants who are developing the so called AI are also the most interested in scaring the world.

The future never seems to turn out the way we envisage anyway, so lets just continue and enjoy our fish and our forum.
Yep, what people are calling AI isn’t AI. It’s software. True AI is sentient and able to think and learn, not just regurgitate web info.

Maybe on Star Trek. Current AI is primarily in development as a large language model and is able to communicate and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions. There is no thinking; only reasoning based on available information which it culls from a vast dbase instantaneously. The big deal though is the move from Boolean instruction sets and hierarchal text strings to actual spoken language.

It would appear that some of what we've been seeing on this site is a large language model interpreting and deciphering so as to better respond to colorful wording in the future.

For others unfamiliar here is an example of the primary difference:

If you wanted to learn about the best mop for kitchen floors you would type into a search engine a Boolean string something like... "Mop head + kitchen": best

In a large language model application you can ask in the way you speak, like 'tell me about kitchen mops. I'm looking for the best I can get'. A large language model would respond to you in a few sentences rather than provide you a ton of links that had the references you'd asked it to search for.

Thanks for that explanation, TB; easily understood, minimal big words.

So...these irritating incursions into our happy little family here are just a primitive primordial AI that is practicing its grammar on us. And at this stage of its "growth" it isn't capable of doing much beyond simply rewording statements made by others? Okay, so did the developer open an account membership, and then just let the program do all the talking? Or is the software sophisticated enough to initiate all those actions on its own? Are its interactions with real people being closely monitored to track success and progress? Or is it just let out like a free range chicken to do its thing as best it can?

And why here? Is this a "field test" before the thing moves to the next level of sophistication...whatever that is? Is this just some small-time private individual who gets off on trying to fool schlubs like me by trolling the internet? What is the most likely motivation?

I’m not certain of the motivation but in that there are at least three different units trolling this site and that each of them appear to be able to post w/out a profile it’s likely that the mods here are aware, supportive and encouraging the haunting of mfk in trade for something.

Supposedly this site is hosted in Sweden and managed by a host of five; 3 from the US, one from India and another from Sri Lanka. One of those people likely knows a lot more about what we're seeing and maybe one of them will help make sense of it.

A self aware software would be the opposite of a deus ex machina solution

My guess is that it's something like your digital chicken but I really have no idea and haven't seen anything like the(se) odd posts and apparent shadowing. A digital system can log on, set up a user profile (as long as mod approval isn't req'd), post anything and delete its tracks in far less time than it took to read this sentence. If what we're seeing is as it appears we should all buckle up for a new version of spam that would be worse than what we all saw 20-25 years ago before filters became more effective.
