What do you think happened to your Florida, Ryan?

I'm not sure.

It was swimming fine earlier today when I first checked on it, and it has been fine the entire time I've had it in this indoor pond (about 120 gallons or so). I've been keeping up the usual feeding schedule, and it ate yesterday. None of its tankmates show any signs of disease or stress, so I'm not too sure why it died.

The only thing that I can think of is that it might have been spooked by my cat looking at it and then broke its spine by smashing into the side of the pond. The cat can't get to the water; it can only peek over the side of the pond, so I know that the cat didn't get a hold of it.

What do you think?

^ can't say for sure, but in most cases that gars suddenly die, it's due to broken backs.

sorry for your loss:(

sorry to hear about the loss of the FLG ryan, that sucks. how long was the fish in the indoor pond, and is the pond heated? also, you theorize that it may have broken its back...did it show any physical signs of this sort of trauma?

we have also noted that gars tend to be more easily spooked when they are in tanks from which there is only a top view (as opposed to side view aquaria). this may be due to their lessened ability to see a potential stressor coming at them; in larger ponds or in the wild they are able to dart away with more freedom. in smaller enclosures where they can only see from the top, they may be more easily spooked AND have less space to travel before they hit a barrier. just some things to keep in mind (and may not hold true in all cases - these are just based on numerous personal observations by myself and Richard) --

The gar was upside down on the bottom and was slightly bent if that helps at all. The pond was kept on the mid-70s, and the gar had been in it since 12/17/2010 without any trouble. One would think that problems would arise within the first week, right?

By the way, I'm going to freeze it for dissection at a later date, so we'll find out for sure eventually.
