Mice....wonder food for meat eating fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i fed a mouse to my bullhead catfish and it was ok...idk about aros though.

Feeding them live is unnessary. You say its natural but its not due to the fact your keeping the fish in a tank and the prey has no chance of escape. However I do agree mice are very good food, I have fed frozen in past.

if you don't want to feed them a live mouse for what ever reason then don't...the main question was mouse as food not live or dead...you could keep a live mouse to gutload then before you feed it to the aro kill it then you have you fresh gutloaded food sorce...

The the issue I can see with feeding mice is the same with feeding any live or freshly killed food. It all depends on how much you trust your source and how well you keep them. The main issues I see with feeding while it's still alive is besides many people thinking badly of you is live mice fight back so you are putting your fish at unnecessary risk for injury and disease.

if i were to feed mice to fish i would try buying the tiny baby pink ones in bulk (these have less fat and no hair, and minimal chance of carrying disease IMO). thats my 2cents... but what do i know, ive never kept aros or fed mice to fish lol.

This thread is starting to spin out of control and I think it's a very good subject. So lets stay focused.

"Mice as a food for meat eating fish" This is an Arowana section so.........

I feed my black aro pinky mice all the time. I feed live because I'm an apex predator and I enjoy seeing the mouse get pounded and the little leg hanging out the side twitching.......

However, I choose pinky mice because they have less fur, the bones are softer and over all less fat in the babies. I think it's a very nutritious food source.

This forum is a wonderful learning tool. If someone has an opinion and/or facts, data, past experiences, positive or negative on the nutritional value of feeding mice please post. I'm very interested.

I just found out that they sell those little baby pink mice (which eventually turn into white one) at a reputed government research center in Bombay (India).

My mom used to use these in her lab for various scientific experiments several year ago.

I am going to see if she can still get me the correct references and I can establish a very dependable source of mice (possibly other animals used in scientific research) for my Aro.

This has the potential to become a really awesome outcome.. :)

Regards,
Sid

It's alright to feed food items like mice to SOME species of fish, but many don't have the ability to digest and break down mammalian proteins because that particular food makes up a very small percentage of it's diet.
