Just for fellow members to know Dont waste your time at tippy dam. Dont plan a trip there Fish somewhere else. Its not just the snagging there. On most northern rivers guys line fish. Its a process by which a sinker is above the line and a yarn fly or other small fly, corkie or wobble glow is above it with a small hook. As the salmon swims up river the line runs through there mouth and they are hooked on the outside of the mouth. If you do plan a trip to the Little Manistee River plan it way ahead of the "run". As you can tell from this guys photos the kings are already dark and had been in the river for weeks ahead of time. When the "run" is on it means there dark. Be the first on the lower river and cast deep thunder stick jrs. You wont be disapointed when a chrome king about rips the rod out of your hand. The real start of the king run is always in August :D. Fish the Pier heads and the lower river. Bring good Pliers all fish will swallow a bait.

Yes, line fishing/line drifting is the most common way to fish at tippy dam however drifting a hot-n-tot is way better than line fishing or a thunderstick, by drifting and letting your bait drift into the spawning holes, you will get a reaction from the male thats unsurpassed,. The male will aggressvely attack anything that gets to close.
The fish in the photo had been in a cooler of ice for 4 hours(Dark) it was a nice green/silver with black back.
You are correct about fishing the piers, thats where the run starts and the fish are way fresher but with hundreds of boats comming in and out the chances of catching a boat is better then catching a salmon. Theres many different ways to fish and many different places as well. My choice is Tippy Dam and the PM river. Not everybody snags at Tippy. there are some of us who fish legally.

I am sorry if you took it directed towards you as that was not my intent. Yes there are some legal guys fishing tippy. Seen only one my weekend up there. I fish with a centerpin and running a drift up there is next to impossible with all the people. The Pm river was full of fly fisherman "chuck and duck" (same thing as linning fish but with a fly rod for thos of you who dont know) fishing

any smallmouths or walleye?
Smallmouths bellow berrien springs dam go out in to lake michigan after spawning. The young of the year stay up by the dam lots of 3-10 inchers. If you have a boat you can target them in the lower river year round where some big ones still hang. The Walleye are the same way bellow the dam, although the local river walleye are always around in the 10-16 inch range the big walleyes are only in during the pre spawn and the spawn.

Please tell me you guys aren't eating those boots???? :WHOA:

Burt
How dare you call lakers boots! :grinno:

Of coarse we dont eat them, Natural reproduction is on the uprise and personaly lakers have more of a right to be here then Salmon and Steelhead. The Salmon run is almost none existant on the St. joe. Little to no natural reproduction anymore. In the next 10 years there will be none. Lake Michigan is changing and as long as the carp dont get in its for the better.
