my boyfriend has got me three micropeltes fry (4" i think) :D im picking them up on friday. has anyone got any advice on here? i know they arent allowed in some states or something but in london its fine. anyway what sort of sized tank (S) am i looking at for housing them for life? i already have two 200gal grow out tanks for the ones coming on friday, when they are big enough to be housed in that sized tank. for now they are going into a 110gal i think. not too sure yet. anyone got any tips on what i should be feeding etc. im thinking..white fish..prawns...once i have my breeder tanks running again i will be feeding them my own feeders but thats when they reach a big enough size i suppose.

Hi,to house micro permanently you will need a really big tank.A 200 gallon would be small for 4 of them.I would avoid feeding live fish.

If you give them live fish they'll be addicted to it and then they'll alaways want living fish from you.
How's your filtration? That does matter a lot when you keep snakeheads.

well well neervana my dear, hehe how are you hun? i thought you was going marine, finally come back to the darkside have you? Wow now that's a snakehead and a half to start with, there will grow huge, once near to maturity your going to need a swimming pool to house these beautiful fish....Iam in envy of you, You should have had my babie's,,hehe....how's everything?

Feeding i would go for prawn's/mealworm's/and once they start to grow small children and people you fallen out with like little people

hey nelly hahaha yeah i couldnt resist taking on a couple of them. well for now they are small, so in the meantime i'm going to work on getting a 400/500gal pond up or something, will see what happens. my tanks have canisters and sumps. for now, they are very lightly stocked. i dont mind if they always want live fish as i've always fed my fish feeders i've bred anyway. i'll try and get a few pics up when i get them in. they are really small though and im not so keen on that part but im hoping they will grow really quickly.

oh yeah and also i forgot one thing, i think they are about 6" not 4. how long can i house them in 200gal tanks for until i need to move them out to something bigger? just wondering about how much time i've got to get something bigger. over here big tanks aren't really easy to get quickly.

I know of a 7/2/2 but you will need bigger

thats a good size they will grow very quick

wow.. you are in for a monster! they have no problems keeping up with the big catfish sp's and are in some cases enormously aggressive.. but on the other hand, they are very interactive with their owners and super smart! one of my favourite fish! you'd be looking at a 4'x10'x2-3' :D

hi neervana , great fish to choose and it sounds as if you are well set up for them , not many can say that.

for life for 4 i would go with a min of 10' by 4' by 3' . the 200g should actually last a fair while , poss upto a year depending on the dimensions.

live fish is fine for them as that is what 80-90% of the diet in the wild consists of. as long as you can provide them for life with live fish (which again it sounds as if you can) then that is not a problem.

they will need to live in there own group with no other fish from around 12" onwards or you risk lossing any other fish housed with them. lower ph will bring out better colour in adulthood , better blues and greens.

as they are growing floating cover is an absolute must. and be carfull on the water changes , they are temp sensitve and can die of shock with overly lagre amounts of cold water , so either little and often or match the change water temp.

ive only ever seen a few micro species tanks at adulthood but each one was absolutly stunning.

any other questions just shout , and make sure you keep us all updated with pics.

cheers col

thanks very much for the advice, i am really excited about getting them :D about wcs i always make sure my water are the same temp anyway (out of habit) when doing waterchanges so i wont worry about that. i will take some pics for you guys on friday night but might be a bit rubbish because for some reason i dont have a proper camera..i think for now only because they are 6" they are going in a 110gal. will move them out as soon as i see they have outgrown it to a 200. if you're saying im set up for a year with these fish growing in a 200gal then thats fine, im sure i will already have found a bigger tank by that time or can always just make my bf build me something in the mean time. i only have bichirs which are 12" and above in my tanks anyway but they are not going to be mixing with these fish as they are happy in their own environment.
hmm what do you mean by floating cover? so they can have shelter? well the thing is all my tanks have hoods anyway and they will be the only fish in the 110gal as i've never had them before so i dont want to mix them yet with anything as they are still so small.
