Midas aka Amphilophus citrinellus at Fish Story

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
More teaching for me from the YT:

twasbrillig33 • Looks like the midas is (or has) forming a pair bond with the much smaller one (barely visible in the far background). I have a feeling they drove him off. The Midas is big enough if he has determination esp. with the help of another.

Fish-Story • Interesting. I've not noticed. Good eye. I doubt that midas, with or without help, is able to challenge The Bigger Bad to any significant degree. The latter is 5x-10x bigger by weight than that 1ft midas. But I am here to learn.

twasbrillig33 • a pair of convicts do it all the time. The midas has one advantage, the powerful mollusc crushing jaws which have better leverage over the protruding lower lip of the dovi. Explains the damage to the lip on the dovi too. Doesn't mean they will win, but it looks like the Midas is using whatever is sticking up in the back corner as a territorial boundary.

Fish-Story • Thank you. Appreciate the learning. Do midas fancy mollusks in the wild and crush them instead of swallowing whole? I'd never expect that their teeth are strong enough to crack strong snail shells.

twasbrillig33 • they crush them! Their counterpart in Africa is the Buttekofferi, another formidable beast. I'm also wondering if your Dovi, while massive, is getting up there in age and is a bit bedraggled and worn out. Thus not as willing to go all out esp. without any cave system to defend.
