Midas and Bichir

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My new midas gets along great with my delhezi atm (midas 4" bichir 9") hopefully it stays that way, I don't want to get rid of either of them. When they sleep the midas chills next to the delhezi, and the delhezi kinda wraps him up like a blanket, cute as hell.

Suprised nobody brought up tank size. That will make a big difference. In a 75 gallon tank, I wouldn't risk it. In a 125 or bigger, with hiding places for the bichir, it could work, depending on the Midas' temperament.

Exactly! Right now I have a female RD that has to be divided from my male Oscar in a 240g. I don't have a bicher but she will not tolerate anything what so ever. so think about tanksize and consider that some fish are born pissed off, but No 2 fish are the same either. Trial and error, (considering tank and filtration) is the only thing you can do.

some good info here. i have a couple of baby midas in my 140 gallon. and the lfs has some nice big bichirs. im thinking about trying one. ... i'm glad its worked out for some membors. :)

I have kept senegals with my female midas, even when they were half her size (maybe smaller) at the time. She used to push them out of her plant pot with her snout but never bit them no matter how many times they went in. This was in a 4ft bow front (roughly 70g).
She is a nice girl though and rarely bothers anything, even other cichlids, which I believe is in the minority for midas, it's really your call. I have never had any cichlid even nip at any bottom dwelling fish including snack sized loaches and bichirs.
Do you know the midas' habits because it is a friends?
What are its tankmates in its current home?
Each one is different, as are most cichlids, and only the owner knows the fish and its temperament. Other than just trying and risking a lovely bichir, that is the only other way you will find out if it will work.
