midas/devil acting strange help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What are your parametres? Temps?

I got three new fish on wednesday, I took all my large fish to a shop I know as my larger tank upgrade fell through so greatly reduced the stock in my current set up, they gave me £60 store credit.....so I got a salvini, a small GT and a small vieja synspila, the shop is usually very good there and their stock quality great...but I suppose there is a possibility? although the new ones are all outwardly perfect, and feeding and behaving normally etc...he has been really laying into the plecos lately, I am wondering if maybe he has injured his mouth/gills? he really does chomp down on the larger one....and sometimes gets yanked along when the pleco tries to flee....I am embarrassed to say I have not got a test kit for paramaters at present, but will get a kit tomorrow.

well I took some water to be checked at LFS, and water paramaters are fine....and the good news is, he is back to himself! Miguel....I noticed something this morning! you were right about him and the butti!!! he did actually start the scuffle....but for the first time ever I saw the butti stand its ground and retaliate! they locked up but the Midas/devil won pretty easily and the butti gave in and went and hid, but I wonder if as you say the butti had been harrassing him and stressed him out? maybe he didn`t fight back until now? anyway I have decided I will be moving the butti into the new set up, and let this guy stay in my main display tank! so relieved I didn`t lose him!!!

Great news!!

He disd not look ill, as said, just plain stressed out of his mind....

Separate them! You will have two entirely different, equally responsive, glas bangers!

Sooner or later the butti will kill him, if not.

On another note, we all do those mistakes, but the **** we can bring into our tanks from lfs's is out of this world! Quarantine!

thanks Miguel, and yeah I have the new tank set up....one question, it was up and running (has been for 2 years) when I went to pick it up....so the external filter that came with it is completely matured, I have left the filter full...and added treated tapwater to the tank, I have now started the filter and the water is lowly warming up.....do you think I would be able to put the butti in there tomorrow evening? taking into account the filter is completely matured, and also that the tapwater has been treated (the tapwater treatment I used also adds bacteria as well)....what do you think?

I think you can put it in there tonight, with a slow acclimatation.

Then you will do 10% water chages every day...

On another note: external filters need to be cleaned now and then. You must do that one day...it is cycled and mature, of course, but it also is full of ****...

Non mantained cannisters a nitrate factories.

Edit: i misread. Sorry. You bought the filter and brought it full. Sorry about advising you to clean the filter....

How long was the journey with the filter full?

the filter was up and running again within around 1-2 hours I suppose.....

Do a water change again tonight, to wash out eventual dead stuff that was released back into the water.

Can you do a quick cleaning of the material in the filter tonight, with tank water, just to take out the gunk?

By tomorrow morning i would put the beastie in.

I can do that, I`ll be honest though....very little gunk came out of the filter when it was turned on, I did have a quick look inside and it didn`t look too badly clogged up....wasn`t "clean" but certainly wasn`t what I would class as full of gunk...

Allright. Do the wc anyway...

The problem is the " invisible" stuff...

I have seen it happen, believe me. Killed a whole tank like that years ago....

Anyway, if it is not full of gunk, don't do it now...
Tell us about it tomorrow, how butti entered her new abode....
