the only way to tell for sure, is to buy from a reputable source

things you can look out for in labiatus are slender more predator like body shape, and big thick lips.

with the citrinellus the body tends to be deeper, the fish being stockier on a whole and the lips not so big.

lol i don't think you always need a reputable source for everything like everyone says on here.
some times you can just look at the characteristics of different fish and just know.

" the only way to know forsure is a reputable source "
" do a DNA test and you'll know forsure "

i'm tired of seeing this in ever single thread lately.

if you want to know 100%, beyond the shadow of a doubt...then yes...you do. you simply can't go into an lfs and buy a red devil or midas (or a number of other species as well) and eye ball it and know for sure that it is definitely one or the other.

usually you can't go into an lfs and just buy a pure bred red devil, i've never seen a red devil at any LFS in all of my city. maybe red devils are pretty common where you live. here they aren't, and i'm sure you just need
to do a little more research to really know what you're dealing with.
if you don't know anything about the fish and what it looks like, why bother, and i don't mean this directly to you, but to everyone who doesn't know any difference between a citrinellus and a labiatus or even anything about either fish

I see "red devils" all the time in lfs. some look more red devil-ish...some look more midas-ish...some I can tell have in some way been involved in a FH breeding train.

The bottom line is still, I could take you to any lfs in Indy that sells Red devils or MIdas <hell every Petsmart around here has them> and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you can tell me FOR SURE, 100% what species it is. You can tell me, "yeah this one looks more midas-like" or "this one is more RD'ish" but that's it...but I can do that on my own ;).
