Hello,

I have a 75 gallon that currently has only two 12" bullhead catfish in it.
I want a wet pet type cichlid and have decided a Midas is my top choice.

1.) Could my tank hold a Midas for life?

2.) Could he live with the cats?

3.) I have a sand bottom with lots of sticks and stuff I found outside. The natives I had we're fine with them so will they be ok with the Midas? I'm aware he might decide to redecorate.

4.) What's the growth rate like on a Midas?

Thanks!

Yes
prob not
not the best, but prob fine if need be
with good filtration and lots of room to swim, prob .5-1" per month -- feed massivore delite, mine is growing like a weed and loves it

A 75 could handle the bio load of a solo midas just fine with proper filtration (at least 6x turnover imo). The only reason i would reconsider getting a midas is because they love to swim around dominating every corner of the tank and a standard 75 is only 48x18x20. The width and height are good but 4ft isn't much length for a fish that will grow to 12'' in a few years (and probably 8'' in the first year alone). My old midas was one of my most memorable fish and hands down the most territorial even compared to my dovii and convicts (I couldnt even walk by the tank without him pounding the glass trying to bite me lol), but a 75 would be the absolute bare minimum to house one for life. You can get away with it but I would try upgrading to a 125 eventually. As for the catfish, I wouldn't risk it if you have a pond ready for them.
