Midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A 75 could handle the bio load of a solo midas just fine with proper filtration (at least 6x turnover imo). The only reason i would reconsider getting a midas is because they love to swim around dominating every corner of the tank and a standard 75 is only 48x18x20. The width and height are good but 4ft isn't much length for a fish that will grow to 12'' in a few years (and probably 8'' in the first year alone). My old midas was one of my most memorable fish and hands down the most territorial even compared to my dovii and convicts (I couldnt even walk by the tank without him pounding the glass trying to bite me lol), but a 75 would be the absolute bare minimum to house one for life. You can get away with it but I would try upgrading to a 125 eventually. As for the catfish, I wouldn't risk it if you have a pond ready for them.

Ok. I really do want a Midas...

Would I be torturing him in there?
I want the best for my fish but I always have a dilemma when I'm told I have something sufficient that isn't necessarily the best.

99% of 90g tanks are still 4 ft tanks, so if you think a 90 is ok so is a 75

An adult Midas is at 16" and super thick.

They are really meant for huge huge tanks. But we love them and keep them within our capability for them..

Just give them room to dash around. Well get the proper tank as it goes. Enjoy the fish and its well being; make changes when needed.

Midas got unbeatable personality.. Tough, brave, and built like tank that comes towards you and not hide like others. Amphilophous familly forever at the top of the wet pet list. No other family make better wet pets than Amph. family for me pants down. They eat like pigs and I love it.

this my Midas .. Get you one! Or Trimac! Equal in cool personality in a different look.

You've convinced me.

I think I will definitely get one and use my judgement weather or not he could stay in the 75.

I was thinking I would put just a single piece of driftwood in the center with some anubias tied to it and also some rocks for him to push around when he's feeling huffy lol.
Sound good?

the umbee pair are dark because they are afraid of him, which they are. I got rid of them because their personalities don't equal. Bad as hell r the gorillus though. Straight up gangster fish

Midas are very cool wet pets. I love the white ones.

This is exactly why I suggested a 125g. My 90 is 48x18x25 so it's basically the same to a midas as a 75, and 100s are 60x16x25 which isn't really wide enough. A 125 is 72x18x22 and would be perfect for an adult midas (although something 24'' wide and at least 60'' long would be optimal), but you wouldn't be torturing one in a 75 either. Just get a juvie and then try to flip your 75 for a 125+ when he gets bigger. I bet u can find a 150 for $50 more than u can sell the 75 for ;)

Heres mine at 15" now, I keep him solo in a 110 and he wont tolerate anything at all. Hes killed a dozen cichlids or so now over his lifetime and is a true glass banger. He is still growing slowly and ive seen some even larger then him. He got to 12" in the first 14 months and is still growing. Be ready for something chasing you constantly and splashing water out of the tank at you. Best of luck, and id you need to upgrade the tank in two years.uploadfromtaptalk1371778846551.jpg
