milky water - help please

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Before all that work it might be worth trying Filter Aid/ Acurel F to clump particles together so they settle out faster or the filter grabs them.

thanks for the reply.

I have done 4 water changes so far and still milky.

As for setting up a python and cycling clean water through.... my sink had a detachable pull-out kitchen faucet heads so idk if that will work. And as for the exiting of the dirty water... I live on the 15th floor so running in it down the drain is the only option.

BUT if you know if any other way I can get a python line running on this type of faucet, I am all ears!!!

Had to fill this tank up the old fashion way ( 5 gallon buckets )

Connect it to anything you can... You try unscrewing your showerhead and connecting it to that? You got laundry machines? Any sort of water line? Bathroom sink?

I used play sand in my 180 gallon, looks awesome. Nice and tanish color. I washed off it off quite well before putting it in my tank. Never made the water cloudy, sank right to the bottom.

Just continue with the water changes and as one poster said use the chemical for clumping particles.

Also, I totally agree with aclockworkorange. I would suggest if you cannot get the python running for whatever reason I did the following. Got a pump and a hose, just pumped the water outside or into a sink, then hooked the hose up to the outside faucet (since you don't have any fish) and filled it with water, stir the sand up, and repeat.

thanks for all the info everyone...

all of the sand has been washed and rewashed. Will be picking up the chemicals later today.

When should I start running my filter?

Removing my play sand and replacing it with FPS was the best thing I ever did. I replaced the entire substrate in my 125g with stock and all in it np. With a piece tube that's only a few feet long to start a siphon and some 5 gallon buckets you can liturally suck the sand right off the bottom into the buckets and then put the PFS in containers in the bottom and open them slowly into the water. It'll cloud slightly but clear within a few hours. Takes a little bit of patients but it's definitely worth it. Play sand is some dirty crap and not meant to be submerged in water like PFS.

As far as the chemicals go your going to waste your money. It might help with the clarity of the water but the fact is as soon as any fish stirs the bottom up it's going to create those clouds because play sand is just so fine. You'll thank yourself in the long run if you just remove that crap now before you introduce any stock. I know I'm glad I did.

If you find a pool sales place or pool supply store you can pick up 50lb bags of pool filter sand for I believe 15-20$ is what I was getting my at. 1 50lb bag was enough for my 100g when I set it up.

Um don't use chemicals EVER! Only testing and conditioner. Never trust chemicals. When you enter the sand you wash and slowly add. Put the bag over the tank and slowly shake the sand in slowly. It'll sink to the bottom. As soon as it settles turn on your filter. Do many water changes and stir up the sand everyday.
