I dont know if there's already a thred for this, if so link me please.

Whats the bare minimum tank size for an arrowana, just one. Does the tank's width absolutely have to match the aros length? I want to prepare to get my a silver.

i know they need room but i can't afford a tank over 300g, so if 300g is fine for one then that's what i want to hear, i will try to get something a little bigger then 300g, but whats the min width of the tank?

The rule of thumb I've heard is that the tank should be 4x it's length and 3x for width.

try classifieds and second hand places....if not then go for something else,i really want an aro but in my 150us its not possible so obviously i wont get one

I agree with a 300 + gallon tank , however its good to have alot of room but I don't really think 4 x its legth is really possible an adult silver arro can get up close to 39 inches give or take multiply that by 4 is 156 inches or 13 feet long now then 39 icnhes x 3 is 107 inches or 8.9 feet wide ...... I know I have seen plenty of arrowanna posted on here full grown in alot smaller then that and they looked very healthy and happy .

I was not picking on you heavyarm really I have heard of that rule as well I just don't think that it is really a "concrete" rule if it was many do not abide by it , I am not an arrowanna expert and truthfully I have never kept an arrowanna before because I knew that I could not give one the tank space it needs , but i have researched it alot and read every article I could find on arrowannas here and every where I could on the internet and I think as long as you have a minimum of a 300+ gallon tank you can start to house a arrowanna but you will need to upgrade to something larger and keep that in mind before you decide to get one .

and again heavy arm no disrespect bro just wanted to say I don't really agree with that rule

So an adult aro needs at least a 12'x9' footprint?:screwy: He asked for a minimum tank size for a single aro, not an ideal size for 6 aros. I'd say the minimum footprint should be 6'x2', a 300g should be fine.

It's all up to you what size tank you need. How much space do you think a 36" fish who is a constant swimmer, and not all that flexible, needs?

To me it's at least 8'x3'.

But in all reality, it's your fish, so it's up to you.

Gallonage isn't really all that important, it's more based on footprint, and your ideals.

I personally couldn't imagine a fish in a tank without enough room to turn in would be that pleasant to look at and definitely wouldn't be worth spending the money on.

If you really insist on getting one, make sure he has enough room to turn in the tank. It definitely won't be comfortable, but it will be able to swim both ways in 2D. My LFS has a built in display tank and there are a couple 3-4 foot aros in it. I'd say 2 1/2 feet to 3 feet turning space.

If you really want one now you could also get a smaller tank (maybe a 55) and a tiny aro and just save up to get a bigger tank.

theres this place around where i live they have a hudge! 1000 gallon tank for 600$ i would get it but i have my hands full with my son dont need a biger fish tank to waist a couple of 40-60 bucks a month on ...
