Min tank size for Arrowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that is a good idea industrial , if he buys a little one , I have mainly been finding small ones , I am not sure on the growth rate of arro's but it would give ya some time to save up and get a bigger set up, Do what I did I went on craigslist and bought a complete 300 gallon set up for 500 granted its a used tank but it is not bad at all its made out of 3/4 acrylic and came with the stand heater filters even a few fish ..

I am not saying that you for sure will find one that cheap but I am not saying that you won't either you just got to check it and you will find ya something that you can't pass up

It's all up to you what size tank you need. How much space do you think a 36" fish who is a constant swimmer, and not all that flexible, needs?

To me it's at least 8'x3'.

But in all reality, it's your fish, so it's up to you.

Gallonage isn't really all that important, it's more based on footprint, and your ideals.

Why do you say that? A chinese restaurant near me had a fairly large silver (around 3') in a tank that was about 8'x2' for years and it always seemed very happy in its tank and was always able to easily turn around, so I definitely wouldn't say they aren't flexible, this one was over a foot longer than its tank's width and never had any problem turning around.

@ Cakilla. Yeah I know it doesn't quite make sense at an adult aro's length haha. I was sortta poking fun at that "rule" if anything.

i would say that 6' x 3' would be your best bet .. and if its only 24" tall it would be less then 300 gal ..

you can go longer if possible but i dont think its NEEDED ... but if you end up with a monster you might end up having to going pond size ..

So of all the people giving their opinions, how may actually own silver aros over 24"?

Having the proper width tank has nothing to do with a silver aro turning around. A silver aro can turn around in a diameter less then one third it's length. So essentially a 30-32" silver could easily turn around in a 55g. The width is needed for the aro to feel secure and enough room to move when they are spooked.

Never heard of the previously mentioned rule of thumb(4x by 3x) but it would best suit the fish, though unrealistic. A more obtainable goal would be to keep a silver aro in a tank with a length at least 3x that of the aro and a width/depth at least equal to the aros length. So the recommended 6x2' tank is only good for a silver up to about 24". Though you will see quite a few people who have kept their silvers in such for many years.

Growing out a small silver while saving up for a large tank is always an option. Silver aros grow rather quickly, on average 1-1.5" per month. Within about 2 years any aro that you start with will be at the size of out growing a 180g(6x2x2') tank. At the 24" mark their growth slows to 1-2" per year and you should figure on it getting to 30 plus inches.

I would recommend the minimum sized tank for a silver aro being a 300g at 8 foot long by 30 inches wide and at least 24" tall.

ok i've also heard of 300+ for one, but one of you guys mentioned that 300 is good to start with? so a full grown adult aro is too big for a 300?

As long as it has the proper dimensions, a 300g would be minimum for a single adult aro. Then again, I already said that.

you could always try getting a jardini arowana they don't grow as big as the silver does.

you could always get one and when it gets to big for your tank sell it or give it away
i know everybody's gonna go off on me for saying this but whatever.
