Chef you may be right. The whole subject facinates me. I'm not religous but that doesn't mean I think our exsistance is just some random act of events either. The funny thing is no matter how different are beliefs are we will all find out the answer one day.
I HATE RELIGION it is a evil cookie cutter that forces people to conform to anothers image of who they think people should be and the most tasteful pieces of the cookie is the cut off dough pieces, dont cookie dough ice cream rock!!!!!!!!
I have come to look at things this way.
For me it was at the age of 24 when I became a believer no prior exposure whatsoever, except for the occasional holiday stuff.
As I viewed the world we live in looking at all the evil going on, looking very long and hard at things, yet, looking through glasses tainted with a judgement based on seeing reality through the actions of other people and laying that as a template on the one whom I believe rules eternity. I came to the great understanding that the evils done by mankind is not a reflection of God, nor is it a reflection that he is not there because He allows it to happen. Rather it is a reflection that indeed there is a side of the equasion that relishes disorder, distruction and violence.
For me it was at this time that I really took a long look in the mirror and did an inventory and I realized that many of the bad things going down in my life and around my life were indeed the product of my own actions. The whole cause and effect thing, action and reaction change the action get a different reaction.
So for the first time in my existence I talked to God like He was listening and for me it was like the lights went on. Very much like the allegory from the movie The Matrix( which by the way in my mind is a smoking movie)
One clear scientific law that I would bring to try to show people that there is an eternity is KINETICS.
Honestly look at the energy of the human being and knowing that kinetics dictates that energy never dissipates but simply transfers, the ? is where does the energy that is you go?
In the end of it all as I reviewed my world view this thought came to me. Rather than looking at all the evil in the world as evidence that there is no God, take a look at all the good done in the world and see it as evidence of Him.
I have come to say this. Each of us is given the God ordained gift of freedom of choice an conscience to make our own choices and it is abhorant to try to force another to see it your way or force them to live your way. Yet, at the end of this life IF I am wrong what have I lost in contrast IF I am right what have you lost
