Minimum tank requirement

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with Fishdog.. Go Hystrix if you aren't planning to go WAY wider than a 18" wide tank for awhile..

look if you are looking for a starter ray, like if its going to be your first ray, i would recommend a teacup. they are very cheap in price and you can experiment with them, and when i mean experiment is check what fishes he is compatible with, then you can go for a motoro or a flower or even a reticulat stingray.

Trevinoboy, like most of your advice, you have no clue what you''re saying at all...you have no clue what a teacup IS...usually, teacups ARE retics or cheap peru rays...and why would you experiment with tankmates when the search option brings out many threads with LISTS of suitable tankmates...

rays are great! I suggest getting 3-4 pups. + a baby shark (ones that look like a shark!), a red tail catfish maybe a gar a datnoid a black ghost (knifer)! go crazy!
That tank cant even house one ray for long let alone 3 or 4, and why would you recommend an rtc for a tank that small :screwy: your advice is almost as bad as trevinoboy's

please tell me your just tolling .. this is one of the dumbest things i have ever seen on here

Gar, RTC, ANY SINGLE RAY, and some dats are all to large for that tank for life .. let alone many of each ...

:screwy:
picking up on sarcasm is not one of your strong points is it

Hystrix are the way to go cause they stay smaller. Reticulatus stay smaller as well but they are more challenging to get acclimated. You could get by with a 24" wide tank for hystrix if you have a good filtration system. By good I mean high turnover and extra water volume that a sump has to offer. Other ray species you need to go up to a 36" tank for life.

Looked up this ray and liked it. I think this would be my best bet. I want to get a small one, that I could house in my tank for 2-3 years, then upgrade. Where can these be obtained. Only seen motoros in my lfs. Am I going to have to order online?

PM Hystrix and Ray777. They have some 6-8" ones right now for sale around $200. Hystrix are not imported very often and the two guys I mentioned have had theres long enough that they are healthy and would make awesome starters for your tank. I can't stress enough about making sure your tank is fully cycled and it has ample filtration. You need big canister or sump filtration. Hang on the back filters are a waste on time unless you are just using them for mechanical filters.

Ya I want to get a Fluval Fx5, and I found a Hystrix for $175, including shipping.

hey everyone! I was just "trolling"! to me 150gal is a very nice size to handle a few pups. if they outgrow the tank then yeah gotta upgrade - but that's why you're starting with them, right? also, the RTC I was ranting again. I should have remembered I saw on u-tube it ate whole shovelnose, those idiots! sorry didn't realize they are so monsterish! as for the other choices I spouted off, thought 1 or 2 would be good companions - with the goal of upgrading/upsizing your tank, right?! my humble apologies for those who got so tizzled to jump out of their mermaid skirts! I still say let's go crazy!! 8>)()

Do you think three hang on the back filters and a fluval 305 could handle a 150g, with a ray.
