Minimum Tank Size for Aba Aba?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had one for a year now and it seems their growth slows after 18 inches. I think you will be fine with the tank your thinking about using. FYI: My Aba likes to redecorate the tank. If you have a glass tank I would not use large rocks for decoration!

Lol. Mine does the same thing. He seems to be getting destructive as of late.

Mine must be a sally... lol he/she will dig out her main hide spot but hasn't re-arranged her tank yet. 'nore has she killed the flash pleco or whiptail shareing the tank, she has shredded their fins on occasion if I miss a feeding. and I agree a min tank size is a bad way to word things.. but to know realistically what you'll need at min but being prepared/willing to go bigger is never a bad question to ask.like my gar she grew fast this past year since I got her. But has slowed down. partially from her tank-size I think though she gets water changes every few days. I've also noticed she is very active at night and likely beenfits from a large tank to move around when lights are out.

Oops! My tank is 5 x 18" x 2. How many years do you think this will last?

Their growth slows down dramatically after they hit about 18" You should be fine for at least 2 years.

Haha only 2 years! I don't think I can get a bigger tank anymore. Maybe next time when I have a house of my own. But just in case my parents allow me to add another tank in my house, What are the best dimensions?

An Aba Aba can potentionally grow to 5 feet in length but they rarely grow over 3 feet in captivity. They are very smart and become active at night. You will need a tank with the largest footprint possible. It is hard to give an exact answer. Mine is currently in a tank that is 8'Lx3'W2.5'H. He may outgrow this tank eventually but I am sure he will be fine for quite some time.

bigger the footprint the better.. I noticed mine does not like to hit her tail on the glass so I would say footprint opposed to "gallons" is the best way to go. imo if you can have an outdoor pond for it... that would be ideal. They also appreciate a planted set-up imo, doesn't have to be anything crazy but soem nice large plants to hide in are mines place of choice. she only goes to the driftwood if she feels "intimidated" otherwise she seems to enjoy watching everything from the plants.

I agree, mine also spends most of his time hiding in the plants. He only comes out to cruise around at night. At about 10:00 pm mine will go to the same spot and wait at the surface hoping I drop in food.
