Minimum tank size for JD & GT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IMO, if you plan on 2 tanks, 55s would be fine. as far as tank mates...any fast schooling fish. ie. barbs...

So that's why my brother has a ~55g with JD, 2x GT, 1x RD, 4x Firemouth, 1x Oscar and they are all in perfect condition, and his Oscar won in a local contest.

He's running 2x FX5 and 1 internal UV sterilizer on the tank.

keeping water clean is not the only thing you have to consider, i seriously feel sorry for your brothers fish, they may be healthy but how happy or thriving could they really be when they barely even have room to turn around with out running into another fish, people in prisons are kept really healthy too but you really think theyr happy in their small cell? i figure we are already taking them out of their natural habitat and placing them in small glass boxes, the least we can do is give them the best habitat we can possibly provide them, i think a 75 could house these guys well though if you get an especially aggressive specimen you may have to trade out for another one with calmer personality

There is plenty of roaming space, and your comparison is invalid, due to fish not having frontal lobes, but that's a whole other discussion.

All i'm saying is, there is no definite measure on what type of tank any fish will need, since it's all theoretical and could be just as incorrect as it is true.
All i know is, when my brother can keep the healthiest and most beautiful fish in the county, in his 55g, that tells me a 55g is not an impossible choice for a tank.
Granted my brother has 20+ years of fishkeeping experience, but that still doesn't change the factual evidence, as to what tank size could fit these fish, and since he didn't ask for anything else, i just simply stated the size to my knowledge.

just curious as to how large these fish are, are they full grown?

Why would you run 2 FX5's instead of just buying a larger tank? He's got six hundred dollars' worth of filtration on a tank that will always be too small! It would be so much better to have a 125 and only 1 FX5.

havin frontal lobes has nothing to do with it i realize fish do not have same emotions like people so this comparison is not 100% accurate i was just putting it into perspective, a fish knows through INSTINCT whether it has enough room for a territory to himself and whether he is being allowed to carry out those INSTINCTS in the habitat he is in, and if all these fish are full grown then no there is not "plenty of room to roam" especially since oscars are prone to laziness anyways if they are not given ample swimming room they become lethargic and therefore fat which can eventually affect their health no matter how clean the water is, just because your brother got lucky with fish that are not aggressive does not mean you should be giving this as an example that these aggressive fish will work in small tank because in most cases this will NOT work and shouldnt anyways as fish need more swimming room than that as i already said i think these fish would be good in a 75 with good filtration and small school of dithers

Actually, that is somewhat untrue.

For instance, clean water triggers there growth hormones, where dirty water will slow down theire growth rate rapidly.
When it comes to fish, theire stimuli are much more determined on chemical reactions, seing as they haven't got a "pleasure centre" like humans do, where the brain would reward them by encountering a "a good surrounding".

You talk alot about instinct, but when you break it down it all comes down to 3 basic things.
1# Surviving
2# Feeding
3# reproducing

Any behaviour you see in the aquarium is a direct link to any of the above, whether it be through socializing, hiding, performing etc.

Fish don't give 2 ****s about psychology, and basically, by stimulating the above, they will live happily and healthy.

But hey, that's my opinion, and i respect yours.

I'm simply getting tired of everything tank related everyone will go "that's too small" or "THE BIGGER THE BETTER" which is bull**** in a lot of cases.

Ps. it has nothing to do with luck.

like i said i realize its not about emotions but you said yourself that reproduction is one of the basic needs and while you will have a healthy fish if you have clean water, the reproduction aspect will not come into play in a small tank, this is actual the aspect that would go along with what i was saying as the whole reason for a fish to stake out a territory in the first place is to claim an area where it can breed, so in the set up your brother has he is allowing his fish to survive (though this is different than thrive IMO) and feed but not satisfying the mental need to claim area and look for a mate (whether one be there or not) and if they are all full grown, then the fish cant really socialize or hide either which was other things that you listed because there just isnt the space, but as you said this is My Opinion and we are all entitled to our own, if your fish are healthy and happy then thats what works for you but i seriously dont suggest the OP attempt a similar tank

Not to do this seems kind of foolish, doesn't it?
Exactly how big are all of these fish in this 55g?Someone asked that, but you never did answer,HrHagel.

The tank HrHagel is suggesting his brother keeps does defy many common practices of Cichlid keeping...

I don't we should get to side tracked by someone's claim of what someone else has...

There are plenty of people sharing their opinions based on first hand experience...
