Is this down to the load or the fishes actual size?

Because if it is load alone could I not just add an extra external filter and obviously keep up with my 50% weekly water changes?

I think it has to do with size, load, and aggression, especially if pairs start forming. The bigger the tank, the better.

Size of the fish is important as well. Filtration will be a big factor even if you reduced your stock to half of what you have. 4 oscars will be aggressive in a tank, let alone 4 oscars plus a few friends.

Oscars have been one of my top favorite Cichlids for over 20 years... A few years back I decided I wanted an "Oscar Pond"... So I bought a 6' round 300 Gal Rubbermaid tub to start it in...

Long story short, it was a flop... I had the Rubbermaid set up for about 5 years and it worked great as a tank... but having multiple Oscars in the same environment didn't work so well...

A group of 6 did fine until they reached 6", then aggression became a major issue amongst them. That was long before any spawning took place. In the end the most I could keep in the 6' round 300 gal tank was 3... two males and one huge female that rotated between the males...

That being said, there were always a bunch of other fish in the tank along with the Oscars... But after trying several different options and a handful of different Oscar specimen... I finally accepted that Adult Oscars would rather not hang out with their own kind unless A) they are a pair or B) They are the weaker species in the tank and group up as a form of self defense.

If you like Oscars as much as I do I think you'll be a lot happier with a pair and a few other species in whatever size tank you decide to go with as opposed to a bunch of quarreling/unhappy/stressed Oscars...

^ You are probably right... Think I'll probably end up with 2 oscars and 2JD's and maybe something else.

I'd have more tanks but living in a flat makes it quite tricky. Especially where I live, I know that if I move other houses don't have floors quite as strong here. So, I'm a bit limited in that way.

Would 2 O's and 2 JD's be good in a 120?
Depends if they pair up? And if both the O's and JD's are the same sex they may fight. Why not go with two Oscars and one JD and another cichlid like Salvini, GT, Male Con, or even a Cuban.

I only got one oscar in my 180 and sometimes regret i didn't get a pair.
mine is a bit shy when other people come over and is very gentle .
no fits, no rage.Real easy going.
You still have to get all of your fish?

No I've got my fish and I want to make sure they will be good - but some have to go and I know that. Planning on a friends boyfriend taking over my extra stock which I only have because I inherited a friends tank.

I have a pair of JD's and I love them, as I do my Albino O's. I also have 2 red Oscars who are still very small. The biggest fish in my tank at the moment are my Albino's which are at 5 inches.

So far the O's are extremely gentle and my JD's are feisty but don't cause any harm. I'm thinking of getting a bigger tank later this year - but will need to wait it out a bit. So either two Oscars will be finding a new home later this year or I'll get the bigger tank...only time will tell.

I just want to have all my facts straight so I can weigh out my options.
