I actually compleately disagree with this .... I absolutely enjoy my fish far more then just by looking at their pretty colors ect.. I enjoy the interaction with them ect.. But then I also have retic rays (plain brown) and gar ( boring by most peoples views) I find my cats have actually become much more active/curiouse ect w/ all the extra space they have now vs in a glass box. Not to mention they aren't bashing their noses into said glass... I enjoy my cats "fully" because they are healthy and well cared for.. not because they look cool :irked: They are pets.. not paintings to go on my wall. Maybe YOU wouldn't find the same enjoyment I do from my set-ups.. but then that's why we keep different fish to begin with. Would a viewing window be nice? sure, but if my cats where bashing their faces into it like in a tank.. I'de remove it. Space/Husbandry will always beat out Aestetics for me. And I'm not about aesthetics in any fraction of my life.... Most the things that "look good" are garbage.. I want something built good, if it looks good it's a bonus.

You are just dumping them in a kids paddling pool just to own them

I have never understood the ghetto pond thing when you just pop your head over the top to get a 15 min look at the fish
Its not like you can relax in a chair TV in one eye fish in the other

Just my opinion I find it a waste of time

I honestly think that a "ghetto" (i think that term is politically incorrect) pond could at times be better than a glass tank. Hence, theres a lot of things to be said re your first statement sir.

We could argue that we, on the other hand, are dumping the fish on a glass box just to own them JUST AS MUCH. Also, if executed correctly, it can be argued that the pool set up could just as much if not surpass the proper living conditions provided by that of a glass tank.

Not saying that you are being disrespectful or anything BUT, with regard to viewing preference, well, as the word "preference" directly implies, its a matter personal choice and liking. I does not mean that if you do not like it, its already wrong (implied).

A pool, even if it was not really meant for fish does not mean its any less of a habitat than what a glass aquarium provides. People are compensating with their resources to provide the best they can for their fish. Thats a good thing, in general.

Lastly, if you think its a waste of time, even if its just your opinion, please be more mindful towards the implications of those comments. I mean, i know your free to voice your opinion but also remember, there is always a responsibility when exercising rights. Just my 2 cents, and in the hopes of not going overboard, i think comments as such has no place inna forum which aims to foster camaraderie amongst fish keepers. :p

that's ur opinion, and ours is that even if it's ghetto, it's taking care of the fish and more enjoyable in our taste. why must u keep defending ur point of view when you keep sayin the same thing, i think we get it, ghetto living since i was born

I also think people understands the costs more of owning such big fish if it cost a few thousand to set up a home for a large fish as apposed to don't worry go out and but the little red tail if it grows to big you can throw it in a budget pool in your garage

FISH TANK or kids play pool I think the clue is in the name which is the correct tool for the job

If this kind of pool is correct please tell my why people are so desperate to get a front viewing panel

I like to sit on a sofa and look at my fish not hunched over the top or down on my knees looking in a small panel

Just my opinion

:) everyone should enjoy their fish the way they like best. I woulnd't recommend the kiddie pool unless there is an added liner to it. It's just not very good material. cheap is the word on that for sure, but pond vs aquarium. Fish actually live in ponds, I haven't seen too many aquariums in the wild. My fish are my TV. I don't own one. Put a tank and a pond in instead. Now i have some interaction. Difference is I will probably take down the tank in favor of a pond as it is much harder to interact with the fish in an aquarium. Also tanks are very limited unless you have deep pockets. Pond or aquarium he is right that you will be dropping a few k on the final set up no matter what you house it in. Tanks will costs probably 4-10x more though. I have no issues with needing a viewing panel. My ideal set up would be a pondarium like what i was trying before. basically a pond type tank that sits on the ground with a viewing panel on the front. Get the interaction of the pond and able to view fish 3 dimensionally instead of 2d in one way or another. :) best of both worlds. I can live without the viewing panel if need be though.

Your right fish live in ponds with mug bogwood and they are deep

All of which I expect you have in a kiddie pool right as you was so fast to point out which was more natural

The point is you will never get it perfect either way. So either way you go it is not natural. I don't own a kiddie pool anymore (learned my lesson) if I did it would be as a back up only. I said ponds are more natural not kiddie pools, unless done right, but then the costs savings of a kiddie pool would be nonsense as you could build a liner pond for around the same price at that point. :) Very few will ever create an environment that mimics the natural environment of any species of any type of animal they own. I'm not trying to argue with ya. I'm just trying to point out there's more than one way to keep fish and none of them are better than the other. I have a great deal of respect for you as a keeper. :) always have. 2 people will always find 2 different ways to do the same thing.

I want to thank everyone for putting their view points forward with very little arguing, but a true debate for sure. I don't feel this thread is doing the op much justice anymore though. There will be plenty of other RTC threads to debate on so to keep this from spiraling downwards I'm closing it. Everyone made valid points, but without the op around it's kind of useless to keep going on about it. :P If anyone feels very strongly about it we can open up a RTC creative debate thread that I will monitor closely to keep the trolls at bay. :)

Seemed like a fun idea so went ahead and made this thread. :)
