i know what u mean but that does not work yes larger the footprint the better but once u get to 4' u get near stagnantwater perfect for anarobic bacteria.btw danny dont use mm and sand at the same time bascally cap one side fill with 3' of sand put a cap on the other side get 2 uniseals cut hole id say injact water from the top in no more then 1000lph. then on the side half way inbetween the sand and the cap have an exit.

before i got my RO unit i had mm,caulerpa and ran my skimmer 24/7. since i got the RO unit theres not that much skimmate so i only skim occasionally

lol btw i would think mm would not allow enough water to go through to the sand and plus you would want enough flow to disturb the surface os the dsb and mm might get washed away where as sand would settle down plus eventually the mud would go into the stand not only rendering itself useless but clumping the sand which doent really allow the dsb to de-nitrate!
 
oh no no i was going to have the mm in one sump and the dsb in another(or a pvc pipe like you said)
