okay, I was at my lfs today and he has 2 polys in one tank, one is what I though to be a sengal, looks EXACTLY like my sengal, but he swears it's a p. cong. and then the other poly in the tank is labeled as a extra large dinasaur eel, but it's CLEARLY not a sengal, it's almost black. He wants $60 for the large sengal that he's calling a p. cong. and $20 for the almost black "mystery" dinasaur eel. Now, here's my question, I only have a sengal, so I don't know what a p. cong looks like, but could it be that he just has them switched around, or do those really look just like a sengal, and do you have any idea what kind of bichir the really dark one could be? I asked him to hold it for me until friday so if I do end up getting it ($20 seems like a steal for something that isn't a sengal and 8" no matter what it is) I will post pics for a postive ID, but I was hoping you guys could at least point me in the right direction while I'm trying to figure out what this thing is....

the first thing that came to my mind when i heard dark colored was ornate

Ornate is tough to get confused

almost black makes me think weeksii

a congicus looks nothing like a senegalus. he may insist that its a congicus because thats what it *came in as*.

99% of the time congicus aren't dark, so its not it either for the other bichir. there are a few species whose color could range from normal to dark, for example, ornate, weeksii, retropinnis, senegal, or even some delhezi.

i agree with ricky. sucks that they use that "that's what is came in as" excuse quite frequently, and therefore expect people to pay arowana prices for goldfish. it's a garbage habit in the LFS industry, and perhaps if they got their ID right all the way to the wholesalers (collectors usually get it right), then there wouldn't be this problem...or at least as frequently.

i would guess the darker fish was an ornate, but you never know without pics.--

well after pages and pages of looking through the "show off your polys" sticky this is the closest bet I could find, and man, you guys should label more of those, cause there are some beautiful bichirs in there, but I have no idea what they are...anyway, can some one tell me what this one is, and if $20 is a fair price, cause I'm pretty sure this is what he has....
