Mixed Centrals and Africans tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are tilapia. tilapia buttikoferi. mike tell me that guy isn't talkin sideways wit his mbuna trash. I know im not crazy here there is no comparison

And tilapia are cichlids, my thoughts on the matter are the more aggressive CA cichlids ime experience rarely work with Africans once they hit adult size. I've seen some success keeping more mild Africans and the more mild sa/ca cichlids together. I've overall dislike mixing the two period but that just me I've had success keeping jewels in mixed community tanks and I've had butti coexist in relative peace with some of the more aggressive species.it really trial and error getting a mix that works

Mike I keep both New and old world and in general I agree mbuna can be nasty but since many max out at 5 to 7 inches they are no match for a Dovii, the Nimbochromis venustus can be pretty mean and is a bit bigger say 11-12 inch I have had them rule a mixed tanks with, Oscars green terrors and Jacks. I would say the meanest SOB in old worlds are Lobochilotes labiatus. they kill all their tankmates even in huge tanks, while not as big as a Dovii they will destroy a dovii of the same size.

It seems some people have luck and some don't. I like more biotype tanks, so I haven't tried it, but have always been curious. African cichlids often establish communities and the aggression is different. You can have a Mbuna community tank where all the fish do well and its fairly predictable, but with some large aggressive CA/SA cichlids it is a whole different level. I've had CA cichlids just snap and go on killing sprees for no reason. I have seen a lot of people post threads on waking up in the morning finding everything killed by one cichlid. Buttis on the other hand are large and mean. I have seen a lot of threads on how they have killed large aggressive CA cichlids. Its always a gamble I guess.

Wondering if I can get away with putting an Alto Comp in with CA's myself. I have just one in my Tang community who is the red headed stepchild. Shunned by my calvus pair, I'd like to keep him, but he cant stay in the tang tank. My CA's though are classed as fairly aggressive though all tiny at the moment. The comp would be larger than all of them to start (he/she is 3") my ca's are no bigger than 2" with the exception of a 4" ellioti who will be coming out.
Oh its a 180g, with 2 cubans, 1 bleekeri, some swordtails, and RTM and Festae to come eventually (singles)

Id say just try it and see. I have had alto comps in my SA set up and currently got alto calvus. I find he is generally left alone as they turn their sides out when attacked and the new worlds dont like that at all. The calvus will often chase fish that are his size or smaller though.

What about L. Elongatus on the africans side? They get pretty beefy and have big teeth. Dont know much about cichlids but thats the meanest african ive ever seen

^ at what size? I'm considering keeping a jewel w/ my festae and GT but I'm afraid it'll only work until the GT (stalsbergi) and festae get bigger then it.
