I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on a mixed characin tank. Currently I have 4 pink tailed chalceus with one spotted pike characin. Some mild flaring up between the chalceus but otherwise a pretty peaceful tank. I was wanting to add another pike characin probably boulengerella lateristriga. I would also love an Odoe pike but was wondering if it would be too aggressive for the other fish. I would grow the others a bit more first then get the odoe as a juvenile so it would be the smallest in the tank.

The othe pike Characin is fine to add but not the odoe pike. It's too aggressive. Likely use ur other fish as a toothpick.

I agree with kno4te, why not add some characins that prefer the lower parts of the tank? You don't seem to be utilizing that area too much.

Too right you are! I was thinking about the lower region of the tank as well any suggestions?

Shame about the Odoe but I think you're right...what about if the others were full grown close to a foot and I got the Odoe as only 4 or so inches?

FYI I've never had aggression issues with odoe pikes. Always very mild mannered.

Interesting! What have you kept them with? I've read that having a strong current helps curve aggression issues so I may try and create a mini tsunami in the tank. :)

I had a group of five with a gatf and a variety of other tank mates. Low current for the most part also. Odoes try to avoid current.

It's a lot of hit and miss with odoes. I'm sure other owners would say similar. But chalceus and pike characins don't have the dental hardware to protect themselves or attack other fish. They mainly bluff with their own kind. Odoes will get larger and bulkier and will easily intimidate other fish (chalceus, pike characin, cudas) if able. Gatf and bigger fish will have no issues with odoes as long as similar size or bigger than their mouths usually.

What about some freshwater barracudas would they do ok with my current stock? Any suggestions for a lower level characin?
