Mixed characin tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's a lot of hit and miss with odoes. I'm sure other owners would say similar. But chalceus and pike characins don't have the dental hardware to protect themselves or attack other fish.
. I wish this was true lol. My 8-9" yellow fin chalceus just bit off a chunk of my 10.5" vatf's caudal fin yesterday :/

I like the high fin red rainbow wolfes, I just looked them up for the first time to tell you the truth, never done any research into them.

I'm having trouble thinking of other smaller bottom dwelling characins lol, does it have to be characins? Maybe some bichirs or catfish instead?

Love Red Tail Chalceus, but they are hard to come by. Do you have any pics for your characins?

Clown loaches go well with Red Tail Chalceus. One stay on top and one in the bottom and both show strong color. Just make sure the CL aren't too small to be eaten.

That's surprising. I have 6 with small fish and no agression.image.jpeg

Smaller lower dwellers-

Tats, Scombs, Charax Gibbosus, Cynadon Gibbus, Cynopotomus sp.

I'd definitely recommend some Cuda - red or yellow tailed.

Odoe don't really fit into the "little guys" category as they grow so fast and are girthy allowing them to consume most of the mentioned upper dwelling fish. All your upper dwellers are slow growing slender potential meals. For similar reasons I'd stay away from Wolves.
