African cichlids communicate with each other differently than New World cichlids communicate. color changes mean different things for the 2 types of cichlids so generally what will happen is either they will ignore each other and basically act as dithers for each other, or they will unnecessarily fight to the death. so, the trick is trying to find different kinds to keep together that will ignore each other.
