mixing chiclids? (African/S.American)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have fronts and jd''s as well as parrots in the same tank before and no problems... What will cuase a problem is if you put a smaller ca/sa cichlid in with a mbuna.. then you asking for trouble..

I really don't think it's right. Even if they can SURVIVE for a long time, it's very different from LIVING, IMHO. My 0.02 ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.

:iagree: African cichlids communicate with each other differently than New World cichlids communicate. color changes mean different things for the 2 types of cichlids so generally what will happen is either they will ignore each other and basically act as dithers for each other, or they will unnecessarily fight to the death. so, the trick is trying to find different kinds to keep together that will ignore each other. :)

When a fish knows the behavioral clues of the other, the body language, it can avoid direct confrontation by anticipating the aggression. It doesn't happen when you mix african/ american cichlids, because they can't "read" the other's behaviour.

Best regards.

unless you want to breed them the water conditions don't have to be exactly like they recomend, the key is to maintain consistency and not put huge/overly aggressive with small and/or timid fish.

Why would you want to? If your gonna have africans just set them up in their own tank, they'll look better and you'll have the best of two worlds...with no complications. Or you could just forget about the africans and stick with CA/SA!! :p!!!!

yea definatly depends on species tho u will want to mix cichlids of the same size so they dont eat eachother

I had a 4" wussy Front with a 3" Parrot...my parrot was a physically challenged wuss...couldn't fight with anything so it always ran and hid....but he went crazy on the Frontosa!!! It woulda did some MAJOR damage to the front if it didnt have that deformed parrot mouth! The frontosa was uncscathed after taking some "Sock'em Bopper" hits from the parrot. :grinno:

I thought a Front would look good in the tank with the Oscar..but it was so different...and the frontosa was always scared...so I just returned it.... :(

UPDATE: My 125g is now all African. LOVE IT! The south American have been relocated/divided to other tanks. The tropical peaceful guys <out of luck> ....found new homes, elsewhere.
