hello there i have a 75 gallon with two HOB an aquaclear 70 and marineland 350 with bio wheel
i have recently had cloudy water issues after a 50 percent water change and filter media replacement due to a bacterial outbreak i went with the ammonia remover instead of carbon in the 70 can i put carbon or should i put carbon in with the ammonia remover?
and i also put new media in the 350 with a size c rated cartridge, and a bio chem zorb packet

i added 2.5 ml of melafix and proper ph 7 powder to tank with wate change.. its been 3 days and now it hasnt changed.

i have gone out to my lfs and purchased some prime and stability in hopes of clearing my cloudiness. any input would be greatly apreciated.

Have you been having ammonia show up in your parameters since the change? If so then changing the media probably hurt your bacteria colony and you'll have to have your tank cycle. Can you post your parameters?

my ph reading is about 7.6 and as i was at the lfs today about to buy nitrite and ammonia test kits i realized the price right in front of me on ea was 26.99 i was flabergasted as i saw the master ph test kit from api for 29.99 at the other lfs..i can head to it and pick it up if its a must... ill listen to you here as im desperate its been about a month of aquarium problems and im finally almost done getting it back to normal sadly my JD broke out in bacterial and secondary infections and passed this morning should i go buy the kit?

I dont run ammonia remover nor carbon in my tank, ideally if your tank is cycled properly and you do sufficient water changes you shouldnt need them. I would highly recommend getting the general test kit. The cloudiness is the result of your tank building up the bacteria that break down ammonia and nitrites. If you can monitor your ammonia and nitrite levels then you can tell when your tank cycle is finishing and you'll be able to adjust your water changes from there. How long have you had your tank set up and whats your stock like?

Ive had my tank set up for about 5 months(imported 45 gallonsfrom their old community 50 gallon substrate and all, had no problem cycling and adding fish) stock is one senegal bichir 11" one male convict 6 " one female jaguar 5" one jewel 3" common pleco 11" and 5" clown knife and a 4 " rtbs

What sort of media do you have in the filters? If the biowheel is your only bio media you may not have a very large beneficial bacteria colony which would explain the cloudiness. I would monitor your ammonia levels, and add more bio media if you can. If you get ammonia that gets to be a bit on the high side (use the chart on the water testing kit) then do a water change. I'd stick to smaller, frequent water changes, for example 20% a day, until ammonia goes away, then reduce the frequency gradually until you get back to a weekly routine.

i have the bio wheel and the bio media bag that is in my AC70..ive been told a uv sterilizer will work? also have researched around the net that taking the carbon completely out of my AC 70 and adding an extra sponge or some bio filtration might help as well.. as the penguin is actually only the 200 series. with activated carbon filter and bio chem zorb..which claims to make crystal clear water.... ive thought about adding a powerhead and uv sterilizer

so ive decided to go ahead and try my hand at making my own sump system. i WILL NOT be drilling. i will be creating an overflow out of PVC and run it to a 10 gallon sump or a three level wet/dry filter. i am going to keep my HOB units as they provide great aeration of the water my return will be made out of pvc as well. any tips and thoughts would be great!
