mixing medias

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With a sump that size it would probably be best to just do a filter sock on your incoming line, have some submersible bio media, then a pump for the return line and leave it at that. Should be enough room for that and you can use your HOB filters for mechanical media, extra aeration and circulation

thats exactly what i was going to do, i was going to use filter floss and pot scrubbers also wanted to add some goldfish to sump to increase BB

Thats a lot of bang for the buck, but something that powerfull is going to probably be very noisey and consume a lot of power and may not be meant for continuous use. you may want to look into that pump in detail before committing to it.

right you were tomomothy, the pump was loud, and not a great idea. i returned it and plan on purchasing the mag 7, was curious if this would have any effect on my return, i am using a ball valve to control my return, my overflow and return are both diy 3/4' pipe

What sort of effect do you mean? I think the mag drives plumb right into a 3/4" pipe but don't know for sure. You should be able to run it no problem as long as you get the plumbing right

You can limit it by putting a valve on it, but its just using up more electricity than you need. If youre still going to run an HOB or two, you could probably just go with a mag 5. You'd still get over 6x turnover, its a few bucks less and only uses 45 watts instead of 70. Even if you take away both of your HOB filters I think the mag 5 should work just fine. If you use the mag 7 and valve it off some, the flow around the pump gets restricted and it actually makes the pump run less efficiently, created more heat and using more power (counterintuitive I know).

i ditched the sump idea and bout the filstar xp l by rena canister filter. it rocks. pumps a whopping 350 gph with no loss for head i do believe? which hob filter should i keep, the ac 70 with sponge, ammonia remover, and biomax or the penguin 200 with 2ft extension into tank as my tank is 2 ft tall, deepest water suction point in tank, also has a biowheel..

I dont have any HOBs so I cant make useful recommendations there. I think I would ditch the ammonia remover from the AC though. Once your tank clears up you wont have any ammonia anyhow.
